So he could truly be completely debilitated, or maybe not. Either way he could use some treatment.


He could qualify to be on disability with severe depression.

Cyrus, he certainly could. Addiction is considered a disability as well.  Not that you get money to get high, but if you get clean there's money to pay for college/job training + counseling on what field to go into, how to write a resume, how to interview, etc. that's how I got my degree/job.

I spent 4 years out of the workforce because of anxiety. It can be crippling

Wow really interesting I was an addict to in my early twenties just now got my degree and getting a real job.

Yeah man I was an addict from my teens to my mid-twenties. Got clean at 25, took advantage of the opportunity to get a degree, certification, and license in healthcare, and started my career at 30. Two years in now. :cool: that opportunity was a game changer for me. I love what I do, I'm really good at it & I make a comfortable living.

Imagine your throat closing up, your chest clenching like an elephant is standing on your chest, it hurts as you try to breathe, it feels like you can't breathe, it feels like you're dying and you have to either wait for it to go away on its own or take a benzo. Imagine that happening every single day along with the normal anxious feelings most of the day, every single day. That's severe anxiety. And it's really hard to do anything at all if you're having a panic attack.

Imagine having no motivation to carry on with life, to seeing no point and no purpose, just waiting to die and not yet committing suicide because of one reason or another. Everything is dull and bland. The only feelings something that used to make you happy now give you is sadness for not being able to laugh and smile anymore. They are nothing to you anymore, whether you want them to be or not, life is nothing to you anymore. That's severe depression. And it's hard to want to do anything for yourself, much less the mindless pointless bullshit of most jobs, when you don't have a desire for anything in life.


Yes that's very debilitating.

Some people can push through it.
Some people who others try to push through it kill themselves.
Some people kill themselves because no one helps enough to be able to push them through it.

It's very serious shit. And some people are too "lazy" to push through it. Hard not to blame them for that, even if it is frustrating and terrible. Especially when you've pushed through shit like that yourself.

It's a really delicate balance. I think opening up our socio-economic system to help people like that or other people who are autistic or deal with PTSD into more suitable jobs is the only realistic way we will be able to help people like the guy in the OP in mass.


Being said it doesn't sound like the guy in OP is getting much of the kind of help he needs. He should honestly go into a mental health program for a week or 3. Those are very underrated and under valued but it helps so much to first break out of your daily routine and then get involved in activities and talk through your problems with professionals and other people who are struggling like you.


My brother went to a program for troubled teens. They taught him how to kayak and then took him to the Keys or the islands of Florida and had him kayak from island to island. Learning new skills, doing teambuilding and socializing activities in order to have a warm meal and a safe place to sleep for the night. And of course getting group counseling around a campfire.
I don't think the effects were immediate but in the end it did motivate him to go out into the world and make something of himself.

He now owns his own business and is the most talented and versatile construction worker anyone has ever met. Least any of his bosses coworkers friends and family folk I've talked to. My big brother is a beast.
And I think it's because he didn't get what so many other people get, a cabinet full of drugs and a note that says "deal with it."
