Problem Converting AA941 to Sterilizer (control valve)

I bought the 65K control valve for my AA941, but it snapped in half when I went to install it.  I found a post on here where another member had this happen to them, but now I can't find it nor how they figured it out.  I may have just tightened it too hard thinking it had further to go.

I thought I may have stripped the threads on the lid, but the old jiggle valve still screws back in (whew).  The company is sending me another control valve, and I have a red pressure release plug on the way as well.  If anyone has any tips, tricks, or old threads for me that would help me avoid problems, that would be much appreciated.

Might want to run a tap through the threads...clean em up and make sure that wasn't the problem

The rim of the valve doesn't sit flush with the lid on a PC, you know that right? It just screws in as far as it'll go

I thought about cleaning up the threads with a tap before I realized the old valve still screwed in.  It still fits tight, so with some teflon tape I think I should be fine when I receive the replacement 65K valve and try again.  The red overpressure plug just arrived today as well.

Yes, I thought the valve rim should sit flush with the lid, and that's probably why I ended up snapping it.  It looks like it should sit flush...  But I guess that could be since this is a canner, not the sterilizer model that the new valve actually goes to.

*** Fair warning to anyone who modifies their All American canner into a sterilizer by adding the 65K control valve: Use a socket or crescent wrench to remove the original valve, as pliers or vice grips can easily strip it.  When you do get the original valve out, screw it all the way back in & out a few times to get a feel for how deep your new valve needs to be screwed in.



If I had done that last step I might have avoided this, but that thing snapped like plastic!  It is cheap steel, so do not over-tighten because it is very easy to break.

Yea I almost wrecked mine trying to sxrew it down flush :lol: fortunately I was really gentle because another person had just stripped Thiers

You'll love the upgrade man. I could never go back to the toggle weight

Whats the benefit of this though? i can run my 941 @ 20psi by modifying the jiggle weight and it pulls a vacuum for at least 24hrs. I dont lose any water because my weight doesnt jiggle unless over 20psi

Whats the benefit of the conversion?

Well, honestly it did not occur to me until afterward to just modify the jiggle weight.  The 65K valve seems safer to me, but it may be all the same if you know what you are doing.

Its pretty silent, that's nice :lol:

The main advantage is you can bring your PSI *up to* 28 and it will hold a vacuum until you flip the valve (for  while).

If you can achieve the same things with the toggle weight then I guess you don't need it.
Its only about 30$ tho

Having a vacuum makes working with spawn bags much easier as you don't need to use Tyvek sleeves

the_damn, look at the threads on your pressure gauge. They should also be sticking out above the lid and this is about what it will look like when your valve is installed all the way. Use some teflon tape too

OK so now I'm interested. I have an AA 915 and found a site where I can get a 65k valve for $36. Description says it releases between 23-28 psi and fits AA models from 915 thru 941.  So does the higher psi change your sterilization times? For example when cooking agar would it still be 30 min? Also what exactly is the advantage of pulling a vacuum when cooling? My guess is that keeps any unsterilized air out of the PC while it cools reducing contam risk? Then you just release the valve when you are ready to open right?
Sorry for all the questions, very curious about this...thanks!

The replacement arrived and I am having the same problem with this part not seeming to go in straight nor all the way.  I barely get it in a full 2 turns before it reaches the point where I think it will break, which I do not want to do again.

I am thinking about picking up a 1/8 tap and going from there.  Does anyone know how many full turns they generally get these things in?  Mushpunx it looks like the threads are still sticking up on yours.

Yea man they are sticking up- it might only go in a couple turns, just screw it in until its tight and you're good

Using a 1/8" NPT-27 tap to clean up the threads was well worth the $6 I spent acquiring the tap off of Amazon.  I ran the tap slowly but firmly through the hole a few times, almost to the last thread but not quite.  Took the tap out to blow the hole & threads clean once or twice.  It really made things much easier.

Sitting pretty at 18 PSI on a test run.  Thanks for the help everyone.

Man if if you went through all that trouble then you better run that higher than 18 PSI.  I run my 941 unconverted at 20 psi and am debating upping it.

I know AA's can handle 30psi but im unsure what the blowout plug is rated and if its healthy over the life of the pc

My main goal for this was just to not lose the damn water out of the unit when running for 2-3 hours.  What's the benefit of going from 18 to 20 PSI, or 20 to 30?  I know you are only gaining a few degrees temp above 250F at that point.  If there is no real advantage I will stick with 18-20 :wink:

Yeah its exponential when you try to start stacki g on psi and your vains get smaller and smaller.
