I was there last November, but I was in Belfast. Really liked it. Kinda similar city to Glasgow, where I'm from.
The Guiness was good, but apparently (occording to my mate) the stuff in Dublin and down South is the best shit. It totally varies in taste all over Ireland too. But I really liked Harp. I drank it much more than Guiness, it's the nicest, crispest tastiest lager beer I've ever had on draught.
I gotta mention Black Bush, an Irish whisky. They serve it everywhere. I was addicted. You gotta get a Black Bush and Lemonade. Delicious.

I am irish, live in dublin. yes the guinness here is great in dublin, if you visit cork try murphys which is the stout from cork, i prefer it to guinness but if youre in dublin it may be crap since nobody drinks it so kegs are old. also very popular here is bulmers which is an irish cider (called magners elsewhere). visit dunphys pub for a good guinness dublin is brilliant on st patricks day every pub jammed, people out on the streets drinking all day long, traditional irish music bands everywhere. in pubs most saturdays have trad music in the afternoon to get people in. go to any small music shop and get hold of the free paper called "the event guide" lists everything going on and what pubs have trad music and at what time and day
galway is good, i was there last month, great spot and very compact, so is cork. i dont hit the city centre much it is good for a pub crawl on a saturday. if in dublin also try out blackrock and dalkey for a good range of pubs all close together. there is a smoking ban on pubs due in ireland in march, it may be delayed but expect to see everybody talking about it and moaning in pubs you will love amsterdam, my favourite destination for many reasons ;-)

BTW if you want the ultimate drinking session shane magowan (the pogues) is playing in march probably around paddys day, he plays in a theatre in the heart of dublin and the pubs around will be jammed. his gigs are usually just a big drinking session

Stay away from Belfast people. Likewise anyone else with a Northern accent. Dont talk to strangers. Dont sit in pubs that have any symbols on the walls. Lkewise pubs with police in them. Be they on or off duty. Avoid at all costs anyone from the age of 10 to 30 while on the streets after dark. Dont make yourself out to be a target of theft by pointing out the sights and exclaiming over how "cute" everything is. Dont walk around with valubles on open view. Dont carry all of your cash in one pocket. Count your change and check your bill. This goes double if they've been exceptionaly nice to you. Dont except invites from people to go to a "wee party thats just down the road abit. No, not so far, boy, sure dont I know this place well?!?". Dont make yourself the "endless pint" of Irish folk lore by buying drinks for all these lovely new friends you've aquired over the course of the night. In a lot of places you WILL be viewed as a source of free booze for the night while derisive comments are made about you to the locals. Keep your hands in your pockets. This cant be stressed enough. Unemployment figures are extremely high in Ireland and the national pass time is sitting in pubs. These two points together mean that there are a lot of people with little cash sitting over half finished pints of stout awaiting the arrival of tourist season when the grand hunt of "The Fabled End-Less Pint, Begor(tm)is fair game to all those with the skill of the Blarney(tm). In summary. Dont trust most of the youth as they WILL steal the eye from your head before returning a little later to blag the other. And everyone will expect you to be Big Ballix McTourist With Lots of Cash(tm)and try to squeeze every last drop from you. "Ah, come on! Sure we'll have one more!". And the casual violence. Did I mention the casual violence? Watch your back. Thats all I'm saying. Dont give the time. Dont give change. Directions or comments on the weather. And remmember, your on vacation! Enjoy yer sel'!?!
