Shit blew my mind like

I know. We should all be like "WTF are we doing!". But we're not.
Did you guys know that like 2 months ago the Great Barrier Coral Reef or whatever died? Yep. We destroyed that too. But we chose to listen to the "Grab them by the pussy" news instead.
And why the fuck didn't you link us?
I assumed you all got the Facebook feed.... hold on

No. The Shroomery is where I get my news. That fucking sucks. But not surprising. We've known for like 30-40 years it was dying and didn't stop doing the shit that was killing it.

Actually did another google search and apparently it's not dead yet. It's being "bleached" which is a natural reaction to severe distress in coral. So like, it's really close to dying. I'd say that means we have a chance at saving it but that seems too slim to even be worth saying.

For the second year in a row, the Arctic is facing a late December heat wave (at least by Arctic winter standards). Temperatures are forecast to soar about 50°F above normal, which would bring them near the freezing point at the North Pole. As isolated data points, the back-to-back winter warm-ups would be weird. But taken in the larger context, it’s part of anunsettling trend for a region that is being rapidly reshaped by climate change. A quick recap: Arctic sea ice hit its lowest peak recorded in March (besting the record set in 2015), hit it second-lowest extent recorded in September, and started shrinking in November — at a time when ice should be growing — following a heat wave.
It's really taking off now.

Coral bleaching is theorized to be a generalized stress response of corals that may be caused by a number of biotic and abiotic factors, including:
- increased (most commonly due to global warming), or reduced water temperatures[7][8][9][10]
- oxygen starvation caused by an increase in zooplankton levels as a result of overfishing[11]
- increased solar irradiance (photosynthetically active radiation and ultraviolet light)[12]
- increased sedimentation (due to silt runoff)[13]
- bacterial infections[14]
- changes in salinity[15]
- herbicides[16]
- low tide and exposure[17]
- cyanide fishing[18]
- elevated sea levels due to global warming (Watson)[clarification needed]
- mineral dust from African dust storms caused by drought[19]
- four common sunscreen ingredients, that are nonbiodegradable, and can wash off of skin[20][21][22][23][24]

Decades ago I think so. I think by the time we actually got concerned about it it was too late. And I'm almost positive it's too late now. The coral is sick because their environment is unhealthy and there's no way we can clean the ocean before it does.
Some scientists (who probably know more than me) think there's a chance for it to come back. It's turning white because it's trying to protect itself and they think because of that reaction it could hold out long enough to come back. They've poured about 2 billion dollars into saving it... I'd not want to say it was beyond hope myself if I had anything to do with that kind of money.

Sahara droughts?
Solar irradiance?
Low tide?
Wtf could we have done about any of that?
Sad to see it go,

The coral itself isn't bleaching. Endosymbionts (symbiotic organisms that live inside the coral) are dying off, exposing the coral skeleton.

Probably a combination of factors but I'm gonna focus on that bacteria. One thing that makes coral reefs so important in the oceans ecosystems is it acts as a buffer and a filter for the ocean. Plants that grow on it and the fish that nurse in it are filter feeders, they suck in water and process the edibles from it, when the edibles are infected with disease causing pathogens these plants and animals can normally process those to and counter the pathogen. But when there is an overwhelming amount of pathogens due to the removal of similar ocean buffers and warming climates they take in too many pathogens, too much bacteria for their own little immune system to fight and get sick.

Banning drilling will stop drought, low tides and solar irradiance?
I'm genuinely curious if we could have actually stopped this, it's not looking very likely
