That's just a link to Google.

Seems like I remember someone suggesting that agaricus might grow on grains cased with unsterile manure.

Well, before I answered I checked the Gourmet section and couldn't find anything there. If I had, I would've posted the link.

Spawn cased with a pasteurized peat based or soil based casing would work.

So a PF cake would work if you put dirt on it?

This should work but I think you'll need a minimum of about one and a half quarts of grain spawn to the same amount of peat casing, once that colonizes you will need to put a non nutruient peat casing on that is about ane and half inches thick.

Probably not, it would contaminate easily. They do however use vermiculite and bran to innoculate rye when making spawn for mushroom farms, I think because it increases the surface area when innoculating.

Doesn't Agaricus reguire a living casing layer? Wouldn't sterilization or pastuerization of the peat casing kill the benifitial microbes that promote fruiting for this species? Growing button mushrooms (ie crimini and portabella) is pretty difficult for the home grower from what I've understood. Never given it a try because the things are so damn cheap in the grocery. The farms making fresh buttons must be loosing their asses, I know the local farm near us is constantly raided by INS because they hire illegals due to the cheap labor.

whats the optimal incubation tempature 76 to 80 degrees F
whats the optimal fruiting tempature 62 to 65 degrees F
When you grow it on rye you will want to buffer the rye with a 1 to 3 parts of chalk (CaCO3) and Gypsum (CaSO4) per 100 parts of grain. The ratio of chalk to gypsum is 1 to 4. This is necessary when growing Agaricus bisporus.
The optimal tempature for the mycellium running through the casing is 76 to 78 degrees F.
Your best bet would be to clone a crimini or baby bella, they are the same mushroom as portabellas, that you would buy from the store on PDY agar. Then transfer this to buffered rye grain. Then either mix with peat and limestone and fruit or throw your spawn in with some old horse manure that you've pasturized at 140 degrees F. Or if your really feeling lucky throw it in old unpasturized horse manure.
I'm thinking about growing it outside on old unpasturized horse manure this summer just see if it will work. Psilocyber is right this is one of the hardest mushrooms to grow, it is much easier to just buy them in the store, but it would be cool to grow your own.
