in my neck of the woods...
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/20/nyregion/pipe-bombs-found-near-train-station-in-elizabeth-nj-official-says.html?_r=0
ELIZABETH, N.J. — The bomb drama rattling the New York region arrived here Sunday night when two men walked out of Hector’s Place Restaurant near the city’s train station and found a backpack containing five explosives resting atop a municipal garbage can, Mayor J. Christian Bollwage said.
After finding that the backpack contained “wires and a pipe,” the mayor said, the men dropped the item in the street and contacted the Elizabeth Police Department around 8:45 p.m. The police, in turn, called the Union County bomb squad, and the investigation was quickly turned over to the F.B.I. and the New Jersey State Police, Mr. Bollwage said.
The F.B.I. then sent in a pair of robots and determined that the backpack held five bombs, some of which were pipe bombs, the mayor said.
Around 12:30 a.m., the robots tried to clip a wire to disarm one bomb and accidentally detonated it, the mayor said.
“As a robot was trying to disarm one of the devices, it exploded,” he said. No injuries were reported.
The mayor said around 3 a.m. Monday that one robot was destroyed and another had a mechanical arm blown off.

Why would you guess pyro? It said he was carrying pipe bombs. They're pressure vessels..

Thats fucked, glad nothing came from it... On the other hand I do know people who just like to blow shit up, not houses or buildings but go to gravel pits and shit like that. Used to shoot propane tanks and shit like that with an oldfriend of mine, hes an old metal head in the woods who forges his own armor and swords and chainmail. As well as have alot of guns and shit hahaha We would eat acid and fire guns (at targets of course ) and blow up tanks and shit, the flames were wild He had a 50cal jeep mounting rifle my fuck that was INSANE. Crazy fucking backwoods metal heads hahaha Good times

Do they shove 5 of their homemade bombs into a backpack and abandon it in public areas, by chance?

I usually say Pyro fondly, as I was one as a kid but this was lowercase pyro, dismissively.
Someone who crushes road flares or model rocket engines, does not die, sticks it in a pipe and primes it with a fuse or other ignition source, sets it off, dodging the shards and the endcaps, which can blow a limb clean off.
Someone who likes things to go BOOM without spending the effort to get kraft paper and glue and do it safely.
pyros are so incredibly more common than terrorists that its a safe assumption until we know more.

My late best friend was a true pyro. We blew shit up and burned a lot of things. Always far out in the country. We never put anything like 5 pipe bombs in a bag and left them in public anywhere. That's not a safe assumption, that's a naive and foolish one.

Yeah, I was just using you as an example. It's not normal "pyro" behavior to tote around those types of devices. I don't think inflicting harm on others at random is part of any casual pyro's agenda.

Same here man, its just awesome to see huge flames and explosions. That why we would always go to a gravel pit where it was secluded and bug rock walls blocking most of the explosions. I agree its not normal behavior to do something like that, unless the guy got sketched out and kinda left it there thinking he might get caught with it. Tho most pyros or explosive junkies dont really make pipe bombs hahaha thats usualy something made to be easily hidden and take out a large area.

I dunno, Asante. I got a buddy who is a pyro, but he doesn't do any of that in cities and whatnot.
My guess is the US government is staging these things to distract the American population from the very shady and evil shit going down in Syria right now

Some girls do, some girls don't, Idiotek. This may have been a young teenager's work with only a superficial interest in the technics of pyrotechnics. The kind who loves action movies and hates school.
When I was 13 my specialty in the BOOM department was small detonating devices of typically 10 grams of high explosive that i nudged into detonation so cleverly that I'll shut the hell up about it in public. No primary explosive, I went around the need for that because they scared me.
I'd make the casing out of several layers of parallel wound strips of paper in bright contrasting colors, without any glue. Around the tube, a single layer of tape so it was barly held together. As end plugs, two loose wads if tissue paper with just a speck of soft glue to make it stick.
I had devoured books at my local library about the atomic bomb and I particularly liked the concept of inertial confinement meaning that the casing was complete weaksauce and just strong enough to keep the contents together to let the shockwave rip through, and then it would completely disintegrate as the expansion took its course.
That was the idea behind my bangers. I didnt use any glue, in the fraction of a second that the shockwave ripped through, the friction between the paper would keep it together enough. I wasnt after a pressure vessel but after a device that would not shoot shrapnel at me at a couple miles a second. A detonating firecracker. I'd suspend them in mid air by sewing thread to get even closer to the idea of nuclear testing, and not risking things like gravel turning into shrapnel.
It sounded and was powered a lot like this:
difference was that it threw around shreds of multicolored paper in a big cloud of confetti which of course was freaking awesome and very festive.
A thirteen year old kid devised and did all that. Could be you or me (it was me), could be your son or neighborhood kid. I devoured science books at the time.
How about a kid made C00l B0mz, put them in his school backpack, freaked the fuck out and ditched the bag?
I think its very likely thatb that was the case.
If it was a terrorist either the device was armed (we dont know that) or they'd hug a cop and set it off.
Of course it can be a terrorist but there are so many kids into building rockets, crackers, fountains all the other stuff that the odds are overwhelmingly towards it having a non organized terrorism origin.
The cops of course must assume the worst because its their job to prevent the worst to happen but between us civilians, no, it likely wasnt serious terrorism.
A 10yo can build a pipe bomb. For some unfortunately this is entry level pyro. They don't see the danger of shrapnel.
I think more than a few shroomerites have set off a nitrous or CO2 airgun cartridge the fiery way.
Its very regrettable and we have at least one member who had both hands ripped almost completely of by a pipe bomb so,unfortunately these things happen.
One group of pyros we have now are terrorist explosive simulators. Inspired by shows like Mythbusters they build approximations of terrorist devices, sometimes with included shrapnel, and set them off in a safe place for kicks n thrills. Not yours andmine but there are plenty.
Youtube around.

so your contention is that this was just some pyro kid that left pipe bombs in 3 locations on the same day, one set of them had detonated and injured nearly 50 people and that this wasnt an act of terrorism

The bomb went off when bomb disposal messed with it. That foes not mean it was armed to be set off.
Bomb disposal often deliberately sets off bombs by firing a charge through them by robot.
What if that happened?
I just went with vinsues paste, I hadnt heard of three locations, even if so, it hardly sounds like professional terrorism.
I think the police and media are "blowing this up" deliberately.
But, we'll see what happens next.

OK I'm having a herb derp moment.
I thought it was 5 bombs in 1 backpack
That would obviously be a pyro with a bunch of pipe bombs in a bag taking a train to a remote area to set em off, getting cold feet and ditching it.

lol... so 3 different bombs are found, one causing injury when it exploded, and the media is intentionally 'blowing this up'. I sure hope they catch those 10 year old that were making bombs, lol.
