Sleep inducing plants
    #2353666 - 02/19/04 06:44 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys, a very good friend of mine works very weird shift hours, on and off 12 hours a day, and as some of you might know it, it becomes very hard to sleep as the body just can't get use to sleeping one day, in the day time, the next day in the night time.

It is vital to get a good rest to keep working these hours, so I was just wondering if you guys could help me and recommend some plants that work wonder for you to induce sleep and relaxation, in both day time and night time, and also which plants you wouldn't recommend.

I searched the site, and found some non recent info, and noticed "Damiana" and "Valerian" was mentioned, but it'll be cool to hear what you newer members know also, and what people are trying currently. I need somehting that will work the fastest most efficiently.
Not somehting that needs to be drunk a few times a day to work.

and please inform me of any side effects including addictive properties/dependancy and withdrawl symptoms etc if there are any.

thanks alot guys

hehe yea, I heard of the chamomile thing, it's good to hear it again for proof
damnit, we had like this whole medium sized bag full of chamomile, and threw it away :/
yeah and I heard of melatonin also. I heard that it's good for sleeping at night and seratonin for day.

Hmmm... Tried chamomile several times and it never worked for me at all (about as effective as a warm glass of milk... more tradition than effect).

Haven't tried melatonin... Someone once told me that a lot of airline pilots use it for similar reasons as your friend wants to. They are not allowed to use prescription sleepers (or other drugs) for 48 hours prior to operating their aircraft.

do not use melatonin for sleeping in the day, it will really mess up your biological clock or rythym or whatever you want to call it. I've never found any herbs that worked really good at putting me to sleep, Valerian is ok, but it just helps you get to sleep and if you don't fall sleep easy it won't help that much. Mj is the best substance out there for getting to sleep in my opinion, smoke and eat and you'll be ready to pass out.

someone drank chamomile and honey for years -- it really aided sleep -- of course theres no researched science behind this -- and it may have been that everytime the person drank the tea it triggered a mental placebo, etc...

however -- someone still swears by it.

I would suggest melatonin for that very reason.

His internal regulating system is already messed up. You body isn't producing melatonin during the day when he needs it, so supplementing it would the best decsion IMO.

There have been several studies on shift workers that have proven the efficacy of melatonin in these situations. In effect you are resetting your clock by taking it. Regulating it yourself instead of by normal biological and natural processes.

I hope to get a perscription soon for the same reason, but I have yet to visit a doctor. The weed works wonders for me. Better than anything else I have done, except for Vicodin, when I took a pill before bed, went to bed easily, slept less than usual but woke up much more rested.

Try "Kava kava" capsules or tea. Kava is Piper methysticum. It's one of the very few herbal remedies I've tried where you can actually feel the effect. I highly recommend it. It helps you relax and feels almost exactly like most prescription muscle relaxers, although milder. I took 2-3x the suggested dose and felt it within an hour or two the first time I tried it.

If you've ever wished you had a valium around during a stressful time you'll love this herb. It doesn't tranquilize or emotionally sedate you like valium, but it relaxes and calms you in almost the same way.

The difference between the substances doesn't matter. This is a war on consciousness, on our right to the very essence of what we are. With no control over that, we have no need to speak of freedom or a free society. -fireseed

I find the whole "my drug should be legal but yours should be illegal" mindset disgusting and hypocritical. It's what George Bush and company do when they drink a cocktail and debate the best way to imprison marijuana users. -Diploid

I heard valerian is effective only after few months of every day use. Some chemical from the herb needs to deposit in body so only when it reaches critical concentration valerian starts working. At least that's what I was told...
Isn't the dream herb (Calea Zacatechihi) supposed to induce sleeping with some vivid dreams?
