Hi a couple of questions on galandoi -
This is my result after two weeks on MEA at about 20DegC

Question 1: Does it look okay so far?
I will do a couple of transplants to isolate the strain, but I am keen to take a cutting to grain now, as I can't lose anything, as this is starting to look healthy.
I have heard coffee gives the scerlotia producers an extra boost, but my tiny stove top percolator only does half a cup at any one time. Hence I decided to boil up a couple of cups of fresh ground coffee in a saucepan and pour the filtrate onto the grain for soaking with some water as well.
Question 2: Does it matter if some coffee grinds get in the grain as well, as my coffee filter was not super fine?
Thanks for your helpful suggestions guys

When people normally suggest coffee, they mean spent ground coffee since that has no use and would end up in the trash normally. You can use anything you want though, coffee is coffee, regardless of what shape or form it's in.
I use instant coffee in all my grain prep, just throw a tablespoon or two in my boil water. Just remember that liquid coffee, fresh grounds and instant coffee is richer than spent grounds. Don't use the same amount of fresh grounds as you would with spent. Not exactly sure how much is too much coffee but you don't really need a lot anyway. Just enough to make the nutrient variety a little bit more complex.

Thanks guys, Much appreciated. I ended up just straining the grain and saving the coffee juice. That can be frozen and used again I am guessing that it does not matter too much how strong the coffee is, as long as there is some there?

Yeah, the mycelium will only use what it's capable of using anyway, better to have as little waste as possible.
What do you mean you " ended up just straining the grain and saving the coffee juice"? You mean you froze your soak water? If so, I would only use that for agar. I prefer using fresh water everytime, a lot of people attribute the starch grains let off during soaking to clumped grains. Re-using the same water everytime is bound to get really starchy water and probably even disgusting, in the end.
GWA is pretty good though, I still haven't gotten used to it but the mycelium definitely gets what it needs from it. I like my mycelium to grow at least a bit rhizomorphic but with GWA, I can never seem to dilute it just right for this to happen. I still use GWA to keep my cultures from going lazy on me though, I just make a couple transfers on it before I change back to MEA for a while.

Use 10% coffee in your agar to stimulate sclerotia growth in agar plates.
Check my journal 'growin stones' for a shit load of quotes & links related
