Huautla mini mono BRF->CVG * 1

Summary: MS Huautla from (nearly failed) BRF pf-tek jars shredded to CVG with jiffy mix casing.

I have been journaling this grow in The Noob Forum with great advice from SpitballJedi and I am just too excited not to share this with you all here as well.

This grow started as a pf-tek but I botched the jars by having them dry-out because of a space heater (necessary in the winter) in too close proximity (coupled with some other newbie mistakes).

I managed to rehydrate some of the jars with sterilized water. By the time they had colonized, I decided that mono-tub set-and-forget was going to be my jam versus fussing over cake misting.

So... after about 2 months of f'ing around with the BRF cakes...

  • Created a mini-mono from a pet terrarium that I had around (acrylic). Used plastic wrap with about 10 pencil holes for a top. Trash bag liner. 1.5" two on each long sides at substrate level. 1.5" one on each short side at the top. Duct tape on all holes for colonization.
  • 24-hour dunk after birthing the jars. Shredded 5 cakes with a cheese grater into 3.5 quarts of CVG.

  • Sat in natural, diffuse light for 7 days to fully colonize. Temps 65-74

  • Cased that bad boy with jar pasteurized jiffy mix. And put it into fruiting conditions with brighter natural light.

  • Misted once after 3 days.
  • 7 days after fruiting, harvest the first flush (probably a day later than should have).





Wet weight for flush #1 is 141g/11g dry.

My first grow! Worth it. And several more projects underway! What an awesome resource this is and thanks to all of you for helping me (whether you knew it or not). Gotta gather some friends.

Have been looking at about a dozen little pins since the first flush harvest. They have been slow to grow. I am really hoping for a second flush because I didn't get a spore print from the first. I have put this guy out on my deck with full sun and big wind for the last few days (bringing it inside at night). Temps have been in the high 40's and low 50's each day. Extreme FAE seems to be helping and I am aggressively misting to keep the substrate from drying out. Here is where we sit heading in to the weekend. The biggest guy in the corner cluster is still less than an inch tall but it seems to be bulking up. The cake has shrunk a lot over the last couple of days.

Awesome dude! Im doing almost the exact same atm....
Inoculated 20 brf jars, 8 of them showed no sign of growth after almost 3 weeks so considered them no good. So was planning on spawning 12 jars to 325 grams of coir and 1 quart verm.
Then my wife went int a drunken rage, got mad at me and threw a bnch of jars outside into the snow bank. She left 6 of the best ones and 3 other I rescued from the snowbank. They are all pretty shaken up but I should have 6-9 jars good to spawn soon. Will post pics

How did you figure out how much coir to use? Did you weigh it out?
How deep was your sub depth?

Recovering from the unexpected! Nice.

I really just estimated how much would fill the mini-mono and hoped the spawn was enough to colonize it. I weighed out 1/4 of a coir brick (I think) to start with. That got me about 3" of mixed substrate. These cakes were pretty pathetic once they managed to be birthed so the 1:3.5 ratio is a guestimate.

If my wife ever threw my spawn jars out the window, she'd be flying out it to go get them.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster dude. Scorned women and mushroom grows don't mix.

Ya should have 7 jars now so 1.75 quarts of spawn which is 35% of the 5 quarts of spawn the tek uses. So will just reduce the amount of coir, Verm and water to 35% as we'll.

did you have any trouble keeping the temp up while pasteurizing using less water?

I also figured with a total of 7.51 quarts that's 433.7 cubic inches. So if I'm aiming for a 3 inch depth of substrate I'll need a tray or tub where the length times the width equals around 144.5 inches.

The ratio of water remains the same, it is really just fewer jars in the boiler. CVG is reputed to be hard to mess-up so I wouldn't worry about it much. When I pasteurized the substrate, it took some time to get the temps right for the pasteurization but I think that was a newbie issue not a reduced water. I was trying to use a thermometer designed to float in water and it didn't seem to be wet enough to be correct.

When I pasteurized my casing layer (I used jiffy mix... so like 50/50+ recipes), I got a remote digital thermometer and that made a big difference.

At any rate, it all worked out for me with this first tub. I am going to buy some proper sterilite 27 qt tubs today to get a few minis going.

I like where this is heading. This is my first clone/isolate. I am going to grab a couple of cultures from this to make sure it is clean, put it to a slant, and then start the fruiting process all over again! Rinse, repeat.

Second Flush Pins -- Extreme FAE [Re: NewZooReview]

Updated the OP. Trying for the second flush. Not sure if I am doing the wrong thing by giving it extreme FAE with outside time in a very sunny, very breezy location. A few pins do seem to be growing. Should they grow faster than for a second flush pinset?
