Got an old server

Deciding what to do with it. It's old, think 2006 or so. Missing the ram and has no hard drives. Takes the old UDMA connections for hard drives as well, but not a biggie I'd imagine as most hard drives still have the connector. I'm actually making this thread to see if anyone has any ideas interesting ideas on what I should do with it. Not sure if it's compatible with windows 7 or windows 10, though depending on what I do with it that's not completely necessary either.

Has a nice solid rack mounted chassis case which is what I was most interested in. If I can't come up with any good use for the dated hardware, I might scrap it all and put in new parts, use it as a rack mounted dedicated music studio type computer. But what are some good ideas I can do with it?

scrap the internals, build new machine out of sexy rack mount case. 

Install in datacenter. 

Use a linux OS. 

Give me root access.

I decided I'm going to scrap the innards and put a new set up inside it. Trying to see if a remote server would be practical for live computing on a separate computer. Like if I had the computer in the server case be the workhorse for VST instruments and effects, sampler loading, etc while I work on stuff on the computer at my desk. I don't know what the practicality of this kind of set up would be as I've never really messed with it.


The idea is that I could have one server, and then multiple cheaper computers in the house set up as displays. Then have the server run all my applications. I don't know if there is significant speed loss. If I'm making music or something, speed would be a serious issue. I know it would work pretty well for media applications like music or watching movies remotely. Anyone have some insight on that if they've done anything similar?

Like, if not making music, has anyone done this with gaming or something? What are some issues I might run into? I know it's all possible in theory, I just don't know how much it might hinder performance. I have an old cisco switch and some extremely basic knowledge on networking, so I could route everything through physically.

Beyond physical set ups, I'm wondering if it would be possible to remote other people onto my server for collaborative music work in real time, including recording. Cool thoughts, reading up on the practicality of it all. It might be easier to just file share in the end.

Right on man! I would definitely turn it into a home media server and a NAS server using openmediavault.

I have 2 servers, and so far I'm running openmediavault to provide network attached storage, also has Zabbix installed to monitor my home network, and I installed the Plex addon.

Plex is fucking amazing, its like netflix, but for torrented movies. Any movie or TV show you add to Plex, will automatically get categorized, including movie posters and shit. It's actually quite cool.

Haven't played with Plex ever though I've heard good things, but I've made various XBMC set ups (without network options) and gotten pretty deep with it's customization options. I've also messed with Hyperspin quite a bit for games (at one point I had a hyperspin setup all completed with artwork and videos for each and every game - took 4TB of HD space in total for the games, emulators, and artwork options within hyperspin) - I'm actually trying to see if networked roms/emulators would be practical as well. I've done some pretty cool automated set ups with XBMC that scrape newer movies off of torrents automatically and store them, and also have it set up for music streaming and stuff.

If I set up a server, the plan would be to have some cheap computers (~$100) on the living room TV, one in the kitchen and one in my chill back room each set up for different stuff. Living room would be set up with full media center stuff, including any gaming stuff. I don't really game too much, but I like setting it up for clearly no reason at all. :lol:

Kitchen I'd have set up for music and would have recipe stuff going for it as well. Kick back room would have a small screen set up and routed to the server solely for music. I'd want to keep it TV and movie free in that room.

Yeah, media stuff I got on lock for the most part. It'd take me a little bit to set up and hoard stuff for it, but I've done so before (lost my computer and all backups a little over a year ago, haven't dabbled with home media set ups too much since).

Beyond that though, I'd want to try and offset some system processing for making music and photoshop workstation purposes. If it's possible, I'll invest in a whole lot more computing power for the server. If it's not, then I could do a media server with a lot less.

I tried XBMC for awhile, found it okay. But once I found plex, I will never use another software for streaming movies, it's just plain amazing.

Sounds like a solid plan man! :thumbsup: I love doing random stuff for my home network it's a great hobby.

I would HIGHLY recommend running openmediavault for NAS storage and a whole bunch of other stuff that it does, truly an amazing piece of software.

I have 2 servers, all using ESXi for virtualization. MY tower server runs openmediavault, and a squid proxy server. The other one is a beefy mother fucker, and runs owncloud, and an email server.

If you haven't heard of ownCloud I would recommend checking it out. Pretty much cloud storage but totally under your own control.
