My bros girlfriend is into phish, but not the dead, she said the dead sounded country.

I told her they were an all American band and represented a snap shot of American music from all corners of the USA.  Their music represents psychedelic music (San Fran Sound), folk, bluegrass, country western, rock and roll, blues, funk, jazz, world music, even some reggae.  That is why the dead appeals to me so much, their music is a conglomerate of many genres played in new and fascinating ways.

I suggest all deadheads read some of the grateful dead books out there to understand what the boys were all about, a really good one which is very colorful and fun to read is called the Illustrated Trip, it's a timeline of their shows with tons of interesting pics, and lots of good info about the band.  It's not the most in depth first hand account type book like Phil's, Rock's, Billy's, Steve's, or Dennis's book, but is full of great facts and pics/writings from deadheads.

They're a true blue American band, and I love them.  I hate it when people say the dead suck, then I ask them what dead they have heard and they only say a studio album.  The boys even said that their music didn't translate well in the studio, that they were a live band, so I then have to let the haters listen to real barn burner shows like 9/19/70, which their jaws drop, rounds of applause break out, and they quit their jobs, start manufacturing LSD and grow their hair out.

Ok so that last part was a lie, but I really love the dead.

I would hazard a guess that Merle Haggard made far more money from the Dead performances of his songs than he did from his own.

IMO the dead are pretty over rated.  They have a handful of good songs and the rest are MAB (mediocre at best).  It doesn't surprise me that some of their songs are covers.
