The Dead got famous playing other people's songs. Talk about a bunch of ripoff artists

How the fuck can a band's most commonly known songs like Morning Dew and Not Fade Away be by other artists?

Lol, covers are pretty common, and were even more common back in the day.
The dead created a number of -to my mind- good songs of their own. Often the covers are some of their weaker stuff in my books

Their most played songs were sugar magnolia, playin in the band, the other one, china>rider, not fade away, and truckin.

NFA and rider are not theirs, but the others are.  Someone once told me they were the greatest cover band in the land.

long before the acid tests, the grateful dead have their roots in blues, bluegrass, and folk music (ever listen to mother mccree's uptown jug champions?)--these musical traditions have always been very open in the sharing of music--the idea of copyright doesn't mesh with wandering folk musicians--another folk music concept that the grateful dead wholeheartedly embraced with the free taping of their shows

also, the way that the grateful dead approach these songs is not just a basic cover--they defintely GD up the tunes to the point that they could almost be considered originals!




TL;DR
folk music has always 'passed on' songs--this is how traditionals are made--the grateful dead were folk musicians before they were a psychedelic jam band and they continue this tradtion

some of em are great for sure.

favorite dead songs of mine are basically all of American Beauty, Dark Star, Eyes of the World, Terrapin Station, all of Blues for Allah, Scarlet Begonias, China Cat

I really like GDTRFB too tho

my favorite metal band is Metallica and my favorite song by them is "Am I Evil?" which is in fact a cover of another band.

Sometimes the other artists cover song is "better" than the original :shrug:
