Let's talk wine
    #2282385 - 01/29/04 01:40 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

what're your favorites? I like sweet whites (like california and washington st. rieslings and gewuertztraminer (german as well)), and semi-sweet to dry, light to medium-bodied reds, especially pinot noir, california and french merlots, and some cabernet sauvignon. there are also some french appelations I really like, like pouilly-fuisse (white from burgundy) and chateauneuf des papes (a blend of grenache and several other reds).

I'm with you on the whites, Gewurztraminer, and Reisling are two of my favorites, though I much prefer Germans to California, as they are a little dryer, and a bit less juicy. I also like pinot grigio/pinot blanc, a lot, and some chardonays (not a fan of cheap chardonnay).

I've been drinking a lot of dessert wines lately, too, rather than hard liquor.. i.e. cognac. There are some really delicious icewines, though they are a bit expensive.

I love good Pinot Noir, and some Cabernet's. I'm not a huge fan of Merlot, as far as reds go.

My most recent obsession is cote du rhone. Get a bottle if you are able.

If you want some label suggestions, or conversation, I can talk labels, but it seems you're just speaking grape, so i'm sticking to that.

I love Rieslings!  There's one in particular from Germany that I love that tastes just like Granny Smith apples.

I have been drinking more reds though (for health benefits) mainly Merlots, and Australian Shiraz.  And can anyone tell me why the Shiraz's seem to keep longer.  The longest a Merlot has lasted in the fridge after opening is 2 days max, even then it had the hint of vinegar and was undrinkable the next day.  But I had a bottle of Shiraz a couple of weeks ago that tasted fine after 4 or 5 days.

I really love me some Port.  There is this great $20 dollar bottle Tawny Port I buy that I absolutely love, Galway Pipe.  I had a 25 year old Taylor Fladgate at Christmas, but it was a little young maybe.

How do regular Ports and Tawny Ports compare.  All I have had are Tawny's.

The same thing happens when I leave it out. I went to a wine tasting, and people were asking about the Vac-u-Vin, as a method for preserving their red's.
The man giving the demonstration, said the best thing you can do to preserve them is put them in the fridge.

I too thought it sacrilege, but came home and researched it on the net, and found many wine "experts" making the same claims.

In your experience, how long do they last when you have left them out?

I'm willing to try anything. I can't drink more than a half a bottle at best before they go bad.

I never got much into wine..

My roomate in Texas was a wine store manager and most of his friends were wine vendors.

They used to come over all the time and sample new kinds of wine. Funny how they would always get pissed when I put an ice cube in my glass.
