OK to use this Lime?
    #2278355 - 01/27/04 07:01 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

In the 50/50 casing tek by Hawk he says: "Be sure you buy horticultural hydrated lime, not dolomitic or other kinds, or it will burn the mycelium and they wont grow. So look at nurseries for horticultural hydrated lime, it usually says "to sweeten the soil on the bag". " The lime I have is 'Hydrated dolomitic' for garden use, is this still usable or should I just leave it out of the casing mix and do a straight 50/50 peat/verm?

Part of the problem with dolomitic lime is the high magnesium content, causing poor mycelial growth. Try to find some chalk (calcium carbonate), or even some limestone grit or flour. Ground oyster shell gives long-lasting pH buffering, but is not as good as a low (>2%) magnesium limestone. If you can't find something satisfactory, PM me...I have low-mag lime and some lab grade calcium carbonate I can hook you up with...
