Question about hydrated lime.
    #4283527 - 06/11/05 03:22 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Hippie said that the magnesium percentage was supposed to be under 2%. Well mine is 34%, but on my casings, my mycelium is colonizing through the casing layer just fine (it's my first one).

Is it safe to assume that the hydrated lime is okay to use (regardless of content/percentages) as long as my myc is colonizing through the casing layer?

According to Stamet's TMC, page 132,

" Dolomitic Limestone: This limestone is rarely used by Agaricus growers due to it's high magnesium content. Some researchers have reported depressed mycelial growth in casings high in magnesium. "

Are you sure you have hydrated lime and not dolomitic lime?

Just cause it seems to be working, doesn't mean it's working well. You might get some results, but you might wonder what could of been.

Yes, but is it horticultural or dolomitic hydrated lime. They are both types of hydrated lime. One you want, one you don't. Judging by the magnesium content I would think you have dolomitic hydrated lime.

So are my mushies screwed? Should I scrape off this casing layer and recase with the correct mix?

Your comparing two different things, limestone, and hydrated lime. Hydrated lime has a higher content of everything, which is why you must use very little..so you dont overdo it.

I applied it forever ago on one casing, and about two and half weeks ago on another casing (it stayed in the fridge for 8 days while I was gone).

Also, I followed the 50/50+ casing tek on this site which is as follows:

The exact mix, to fill a filter patch bag 3/4 full is:

* 15 1/2 cups vermiculite
* 15 1/2 cups peat moss
* 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
* 1.2 cups of hydrated lime
* 15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water) 16 cups = 1 gallon

If this is wrong, shouldn't someone fix it? I didn't know any better and I'm sure plenty of newbs won't either until it's too late.

I dont know that it is wrong, it seems ok to me. I mean, peat will vary from place to place which is why for truly accurate results you want to measure your pH...
