Re: Vegetarian/vegan bodybuilding? [Re: vandago]

Sure it does. Ovo-lacto vegetarianism is the most common form of vegetarianism. According to wikipedia "Generally speaking, when one uses the term vegetarian an ovo-lacto vegetarian is assumed." So if you ever see suitable for vegetarians on things like food packets or in restaurants, it can still contain dairy, eggs, or honey. Always read the ingredients.

That's the divide between vegans and vegetarians, vegans abstain from all animal products. Vegetarians abstain from products of animal slaughter, and then there's a few different diets placed in between the two.

People like to read past "this is what worked for me it could be different for you" and then say the exact same shit to drive their point home.

OP you ever want lifting advice PM me. You will not become a bodybuilder from yoga and being vegan though. That much I can promise you.

Oh and poll, while it sounds like you follow a healthy as all fuck diet and great job. I wouldn't call eggs milk and cheese vegetarian, may as well just throw fish in there bud.

Sorry stretching and breathing. Yoga was the same difficulty level as our 30 minute warmups when I played ball in school. I have work but I will happily provide some links later about the actual physical difficulty of yoga.

Nah I don't need any lifting advice, was just curious about other peoples' input on nutrition is all. I had no intention of doing yoga though lol, I'm sure it has it's benefits but it's not for me.

Some of these food suggestions are pretty good though, I'm gonna try lookin for seitan today, definitely seems like the most useful vegetarian food I've seen so far.

@Mescalean, eggs and dairy are vegetarian depending on how they are sourced and made. Its what distinguishes the diet from a vegan one. You can google it and pretty much every definition will give you the same answer. I know it's semantics, but if you're not eating dairy or eggs, you follow a vegan diet. If you eat one or both you are placed under the broader term vegetarian. You don't have to take my word for it, research it.

Trail mix is always a good snack to have in your pocket to carry around everywhere. That way you don't ever risk skipping a meal or planned snack.

Without eggs or dairy, you may find it more difficult than it needs to be, but best of luck.

so much facepalm in this post its mind blowing. Brah yoga is much more than stretching. its beyond "Getting swole". I guess I love to lift and workout. But yoga is about stilling the body and mind, and realizing the true nature of reality and emptiness. Going into yoga with attempts to look like a bodybuilder is asinine to say the least

As I said earlier, its like comparing justin bieber to bach

This is what a much more well read and knowledgable poster posted in regards to yoga:
Yoga is a transcendental science, meaning that its techniques have originated in states of consciousness characterized by præternatural insight, prajna (wisdom). Those insights were transformed, (metaphorically, like a step-down transformer such as the one which supplies a laptop computer with 12 volts stepped-down from 110-115 house voltage) into systematic techniques which engage the mind-body, and which prepares it for the direct reception of transcendental states. Namaste. ॐ

If it doesnt work for you, thats great. But telling me its not physically exerting just tells me you are clueless on the topic...which is okay. I am clueless on politics. But its irresponsible to spread misinformation

While I may be clueless as to all the "spiritual/mystic" mumbo jumbo behind it. "earth brother". I have taken classes and can safely say I was not exhausted after the class, in fact I felt ready to either lift for 2 hours or play a game of ball. Literally the same energy I get from "warming" up for an athletic event. Also the type of weight lifting I do isn't really for aesthetics but so I can easily "handle myself" better.

All this, all this just mentioned. Is nothing of the physical. It's of the mind. Just like religion. If it's something that betters you great. But it didn't do much for me besides stretch me out and help focus on breathing patterns. If it works as meditation for people great, but when it comes to physical output/power/strength it is far from challenging, at least for me.

Ilya Ilyin won his last gold medal at Worlds Weightlifting event after training for a year as a vegetarian (he still hits the juice like all the other top guys mind you) so there is that if you want an example of what can be done without eating cow and chicken.

Update:

Fuck this LOL

I didn't give in due to any temptation, it's actually pretty easy being vegetarian, going vegan would've been too much for me though. Either way it's just too impractical for me at the moment anyway. I'm just gonna spend more money on quality unprocessed meats and follow a ketogenic diet for the most part. I might take up hunting and I'm gonna try to make friends with the farmer down the street so maybe I can get discounts on his cuts lol.

Some philosophical expositions on yoga definitely cast it in a religious light, but you may be making too broad of generalizations if you think a little mindfulness practice entails adherence to a religious vehicle. The main purpose of asana - the postural aspect of yoga - is to build a stronger mind-muscle connection, that in theory will eventually give the practitioner control over physiological elements that are normally autonomous. The American Heart Journal observed a yogi who stopped his heart for seven days! What is more, the mindfulness component of yoga has been shown to readily translate into improved performance among weight-training athletes, who saw strength gains without having to physically exercise .

Are you basing your entire judgement of the asana component of yoga on a single class you took? There is no end to teachers these days - if you want a genuine work out from yoga, you're gonna need to find a teacher who gets a bit more into the practice than some chick at LA Fitness teaching bastardized ashtanga like it's the next pilates.

Don't get me wrong, as a bodybuilder, I would never even think to rely on yoga to lose or gain weight, but just because it's not good for mass building or fat-loss, doesn't negate the benefits it offers to balance, stability, flexibility, and mental involvement in exercise both on and off the mat.

I can understand your reservations about the veracity of the first source.

However, it is not the only piece of literature that touches on the yogic control of autonomous bodily functions, the heart in particular:

Experiments in India on "Voluntary" Control of the Heart and Pulse
Voluntary heart rate reduction following yoga using different strategies

The other studies do not show outright stoppage of the heart, as in the first source cited, but they do display dramatic reduction of heart rate, which I see as relative evidence supporting the claims made in the first source, not completely verifying it though.

precisely^

yoga plus wieght training opens up a whole new component in terms the functionality of your muscles. To move pieces of metal in linear planes of motion and define that as "functional" is silly as hell. No athlete just lifts. Most athletes are forced to do move dynamic movements. And that is what yoga provides. A series of dynamic movements to add to your strength training practice. Hands down one of the most powerful life habits I have had
