Insulin is a double edged sword. It can both be an anabolic hormone (helps build muscle) or just a plain fat building hormone.

Insulin triggers growth of muscle cells that do not usually grow. That being said, you do not want to use insulin unless you are a professional bodybuilder who decides the risk is worth being able to get on stage and win contests. There are many other anabolics that have a far better safety profile. You can do it safely if you know what you're doing, but IMO, injecting insulin is about the dumbest thing you could possibly put in your body that doesn't immediately kill you.

I started out as an "ectomorph" at 145lbs and put on 20lbs of lean mass in the first 4 weeks of lifting.
you may have gained 20lbs overall but most of it was water.
there is a difference between lean mass & muscle.

uhm, i was under the impression that you create an "insulin spike" by eating foods with sugar directly after working out, in order to stimulate muscle growth. www.bodybuilding.com is a great wealth of information.

^ That's what a lot of people do, but that doesn't mean they are right.
Meat has insulinogenic properties in itself. Drinking sugar water is fine, but not necessary in my opinion.

I'm pretty interested in starting some kind of weightlifting routine to get better defined, but I'm afraid I am going to end up all bulky like Sylvester Stallone or something.
I find it hilarious when people worry about that. I wish it were so easy it could catch you by surprise.
You will like the way you look, I promise.
i find it even more hillarious that he adresses silvester as "bulky" given what a small dude he is.
anyway, for the starter, there are a number of exercises you need, everything is is BULLSHIT.
those are:
1.) SQUAT (all the way down, atg - ASS TO GRASS) 2.) DEADLIFT 3.) BENCHPRESS 4.) DIP 5.) BENT OVER ROW 6.) CHIN/PULLUPS
no machines, no garbage, perform all exercises with a barbell and weight you can do for 3x8 reps. increase weight once reached, always use PROPER form, leave your ego at the door.
focus on the core lifts and youll grow, how much or how little depends on you, your dedication, your will, your pain tollerance AND how much you eat.
*edit im guessing thats charles atlas up there? what the fuck, look at his legs, lol did he ever squat in his whole life ?
whoa whoa whoa, ok forget about ASS TO THE GRASS squats. unless you're trying to become an olympic lifter, you don't need that.
I highly suggest doing Box Squats. They're easier on your body, you'll lift more, and you're be WAAAAAAY more powerful.
Also, you need to find/develop a warm up routine. god forbid you enter the domain of weight lifting without knowing how to warm up and end up injured.
WHEN DOING SHIT LIKE SQUATS OR DEADLIFTS, PLEASE RESEARCH PROPER TECHNIQUE!!!!!!!!!!!! BECOME A FUCKING PRO AT THE BIOMECHANICS OF IT!!! Get some asshole trainer to watch you, seriously, if anything you want to be perfect, you want your squats and deadlifts. God forbid you tweak your back or hurt your knees. I speak from experience. It's not worth the bullshit to rehab, just be safe and workout for functionability. You'll get big and not be a body building bitch.
not to be condenscending, but I think purely body building is a heap of shit. Enhancing your abilities is one thing but working on an aesthetic appearance is ehhh questionable.

I honestly think that I thought the same way too, and I can appreciate what Seuss is saying. But when I experienced both sides of the coin I remembered my skinny roots and grounded myself. Stereotyping anyone is just lame. Bodybuilders and skinny druggies alike are a lot more important and diverse than I could have imagined.
And as far as insulin's concerned, it's a powerful hormone like Catalysis said. It can definitely bring people to new levels, but even very little use of insulin is abuse of insulin in my books. It's a powerful hormone to be fucking around with and considering how safely anabolic steroids can build your physique, there's no reason for ANYONE to be using it.
I know that there are a lot of pro bodybuilders and especially amateurs that use this drug, and I'll admit that it can be used with relative safety. But we don't know enough about the long term affects of this. I personally don't want to become insulin resistant because I wanted a few extra pounds of muscle or excellent contest conditioning. The dangers are very real and it's easy to overdose on this drug. I accidentally overdosed on clenbuterol (a bronchialdilator abused for fat loss) and it was a horrible experience. Accidents happen and I'd rather not make the mistake of taking too much insulin or suffering long term effects.
