cateyes said: i give you alot of credit for a least giving it a shot for awhile... if you do this right, you'll probably remain one for life... beans are great, reds, blacks and white... beans are the one food from a can that are good for you... they're packed in a viscous fluid, from the beans themselves. rinse them in a strainer, they store well in a container... contrary to popular beliefs you really don't need more then 75-80 grams of protein each day, more is OK though. i probably eat about 110 grams a day, maybe more, maybe less... batsami rice or dark rice is great too, it takes time to prepare though, but it beats the piss out of instant box rice. mixed beans and rice is a staple for many cultures. mix in some extra virgin olive oil or if you can afford it flax seed oil is even better... you need fats in your diet, but not as much as some here like to believe. with the oil and your favorite spices beans and rice can not only turn out to be a tasty meal, it's pretty wholesome too... another excellent source of healthy oils are avocados. they taste pretty bland really but they are considered one of the top ten foods to eat
spinach is great but kale has a much better calcium profile i've learned recently from someone here on the boards. there's oxalate in spinach which prevents the complete absorption of the calcium. vegetarians usually eat dairy. dairy is a well known allergen, you can safely get all the calcium you need each day from kale and other greens. broccoli is a killer... tofu is another great source of calcium as well as protein, so by using it you kill two birds with one stone. other veggies are important too, but if your on a budget make it green... if you need to eat dairy, minimize it's usage because there is soooo much shit in it it'll blow your mind... what they allow to be in milk is criminal... the only reason it's allowed to be in there is it's impossible for it not to be in there in order to prevent rampant disease and to guarantee high output production... that will be your homework, check out what he USDA and FDA allow to be in our milk... maybe once you find out you'll give up milk willingly...
do not ignore good portions of fruit... having some each meal is a great way to remain healthy, the more you can afford to eat, the better off in the long run you'll be.
grains in general aren't really that great for you because they can cause inflammation but if you need to eat them avoid wheat/gluten as if it were the plague. it's right on top of the list of known allergens in many. vegetarians eat out of bags and boxes and that's not cool in my book, but you do what you want to do... just avoid any that contain wheat/gluten, which may eliminate quite a bit. and while you're looking at labels, avoid all products with sugar and sugar itself. it looks like white, processed sugar effects your metabolism and is an inflammatory agent in many. use honey or maybe agave. stevia, which is derived from a cactus like agave is an incredibly powerful sweetener, you'll be stunned how little you'll need to sweeten things and you can safely cook with it up to 375 degrees... ohhh, by the way, alcohol is a sugar! but you do what you do best bro, this is your life...
everybody, i don't care how in shape you think you are, should use some supplements because the foods available lack and the RDA that twas established many many decades ago. the RDA is the minimum amount needed to SUSTAIN life... we need much more then the RDA, definitely... at least one high quality, high potency vitamin/mineral multi each day, two would be better, one in the am and one before dinner... everyone should be taking in at least 1-2 grams of vitamin c each day, definitely... everybody should be taking at least 1000IU's of vitamin d each day. why? because an overwhelming number of people are testing very low on vitamin d. low vitamin d can cause so many illnesses including cancer... look it up if you don't believe me... vitamin d is critical for the body to be able to use calcium also... yeah, vitamin d... vitamin d testing might just become a standard part of an annual blood exam, that's how bad the problem is. omega3... everyone eating boxed or bagged foods must use omega3 because you need a specific balance between it and omega6 and or modern diets are extremely high in omega6, it's ridiculous.. that imbalance has been linked to a boatload of serious illnesses... omega3 for the win! if not omega3, use fish oil capsules because they also contain large amounts of omega3. just try to use as high a quality of the product as you can because the cheap fish oil supplements come from farm raised fish and that itself posses problems...
drink plenty of water everyday. don't consider the fluids in your beer as water, you'll just be screwing yourself. do this right man, don't become a statistic for meat eaters to use against the lifestyle... be smart...
i'm getting tired, i've probably overlooked somethings, i'll look at this again tomorrow and if i missed something, which i' sure i have i'll post it...
going balanced vegetarian is a smart move in the long run... ggod luck...

this is incredibly good advice by the way. i did takes some notes myself. it continually fascinates me how simple really it is to eat healthy. by picking just the right foods it's possible to minimize one's diet to the point where it becomes overseeable, comprehensible, simple to manage in today's complex lives.
i want to add, if one wants to take the flexitarian route, i encourage to eat no more than one serving of meat each week and only buy the best fucking organic quality you can acquire and when you eat it, be utterly grateful for the life sacrificed. seriously screw your wallet. make it normal for good meat to be expensive. it's ridiculously cheap meat in the economy that is sustaining the growth of slaughterhouse industries and unethical animal treatment. by paying up for free-range, 100% organically raised animals you are treating your body to some powerful nutrition as well as voting with your dollar.
