Anti-Inflammatory effect of psilocybin * 1
    #22650331 -

So I've been taking a lot of psilocybin mushrooms lately and I've noticed every time I take them that I get a significant anti-inflammatory effect, much much stronger than that of any other substance I have discovered so far, including curcumin. I (and most people I see in my day to day life) have inflammation throughout the body, the visible manifestation of which is most easily seen in the face, which can appear soft and fluffy, with a poorly defined chin/jawline. Taking curcumin daily and eliminating dairy/processed sugar has improved the improved inflammation levels in my body significantly, but when I take psilocybin the effect is sudden and dramatic. The first couple of times I noticed it, I thought perhaps I was simply imagining things because I was on mushrooms, and it didn't make any sense to me that they might have anti-inflammatory properties. But yesterday I took a large dose and the effect was so dramatic that I knew I wasn't imagining it. So today I looked it up and this article in scientific american appears to confirm that LSD can combat inflammation, which means that psilocybin almost certainly does, too.

I wish I could find an anti-inflammatory substance as effective as psilocybin that doesn't alter your consciousness (as significantly, at least).

How long does this effect last for you? I have inflammatory neuropathy and I feel decent while tripping but it's never provided me anything substantial. Curcumin does nothing for me either

Tryptamines are serotonin antagonists

That being said both histamine and serotonin are both directly related with inflammation.

More serotonin and histamine causes an increase in inflammatory response

I dosed at about noon yesterday, and the anti-inflammatory effect lasted until I went to sleep at midnight, and when I woke up this morning the inflammation had returned to normal levels. I wish I knew what was causing the inflammation. I take several medications at night. One of them is Remeron, and there are reports that a very small percentage of people experience inflammation from taking it.

Can I get some sources on this? It seems far too simplistic. Everything I have learned about serotonin leads me to believe that the effects of serotonin agonism or antagonism depend entirely on the receptor subtype and the location in the brain in which the action is taking place.

Quote:
According to a recent article on Medical News Today, a study performed by Charles Nichols, pharmacologist at LSU Health Sciences Center, has concluded in the use of LSD as a very potent anti-inflammatory. The research was directed toward TNF-alpha, a potent pro-inflammatory adipokine. The researchers found that when serotonin 5-HT2A receptor proteins were activated, the receptor proteins impressively blocked TNF-alpha induced inflammatory responses. But how did these researches activate serotonin 5-HT2A? With the use of a drug belonging to the LSD family, of course! The researchers found that when TNF-alpha was injected into mice after serotonin 5-HT2A receptors were activated, there was a near complete inhibition of inflammation in comparison to mice whose receptors were not activated and had a full inflammatory response. Interestingly and most relevant to the topic of the past two weeks, the tissue that this procedure had the most powerful effect on was intestinal tissue, and doses of less than 300 times lower than what is required to illicit any behavioral effects of the drug were found to induce this powerful anti-inflammatory effect!

Although extremely interesting, LSD is a serious hallucinogenic drug with severe side effects, and although this study makes it a point to establish that only very minute doses are needed to illicit an anti-inflammatory response, they fail to mention whether or not the mice developed any side-effects from the drug. I think that a good follow up study would be to study any side effects that occur after administering the small doses of this drug over a long period of time to mice. Even in low doses, I am convinced that over a long treatment period, mice would eventually develop some sort of side effect because of the LSD families very potent abilities to cause severe mental abnormalities. Also, the drugs belonging to this family are severely addictive, it would be nice to see a follow up study done on how these mice react once the drug isn't going through their bodies. What are your thoughts and opinions?

Are you positive its inflammation? I mean I think it's likely I just wouldn't want to recommend an extreme change otherwise. But most chronic inflammation is caused by microbial endotoxins translocating into the blood stream from mucosal layers such as the intestinal tract and oral cavity. This happens largely because we've reduced substrate diversity in our diets leading to loss of microbial diversity and the resulting suppression of some strains while others overgrow. Add antibiotics or proton pump inhibitors or foods rich in digestive enzymes and you're disturbing the ecology further. Then add foods that compromise the integrity of the intestinal barrier (or gluten/zein/etc) and you increase the rate at which these endotoxins can pass through. This has been colloquially known as "leaky gut syndrome". There's an entire community promoting a Paleo based diet called AIP that aims to address this. I've been eating it about sixth months and went from barely being able to walk because everything felt like hot coals  to a little achiness here and there

Honestly though most of the world is probably dealing with this. Hence the increasing CVD, cancer, autoimmune, diabetes etc rates.

Knyggaplease, when you said "inflammatory response" I thought you meant that serotonin increases were positively correlated with inflammation, not with anti-inflammatory response mechanisms

That is interesting, though, that a dose 300 times lower than a normal dose induced the effect. I microdosed the other day like .3 and I don't remember whether or not I got the effect. I will try it again in a few days with a very small dose, like .1, to see if it works.

I am almost positive it is inflammation, because I can't think of anything else that could cause such a dramatic physical alteration in such a rapid period of time other than an increase or reduction in swelling. I will have to take before and after pictures the next time I take a large dose.

I mean I believe you. Most first world health problems develop from inflammation likely for the reasons stated. Just figured I'd ask. Chronic inflammation doesn't usually produce visible swelling the way acute inflammation would, but I suppose it's possible

I actually believe a very significant portion of the population have some level of chronic inflammation that is visible, as a result of any number of factors including diet, poor sleep schedule, stress, etc. Now that I have seen what it looks like, I can the difference between the faces of people who have it and the people who don't. It isn't fat. It's a small layer of puffiness. It's especially easy to spot on people who are really skinny, when their faces are still fluffy and their jawline/chin seems poorly toned compared to the rest of their body.

It's a lot softer to the touch than layers of fat under skin are.

Sorry for thread derail, but what's wrong with enzyme rich food? I know that too much of anything ruins homeostasis, but I never heard anything bad about them. Don't get me wrong I know I gotta do my homework and I will, but I'm really curious as to why you said that.

It could also be generalized vasoconstriction that (visibly) appears anti-inflammatory.

Oops that was my bad. I meant digestive enzyme inhibitors. In theory this can lead to colonic nutrient accumulation and alter microbial ecosystems via overfeeding.

Indeed. Arguably the biggest factor in cancer risk. Its been implicated in nearly every nonheritible/nontransmissible disease that has been thoroughly studied

So I have been doing some research and this is what I dug up. Inflammation and its inhibition are linked with "cytokines". Different cytokines may have inflammatory or anti-inflammatory properties. Cytokine levels are modulated by serotonin activity. Different types of cytokines are modulated by different receptor subtypes. 5HT-2a, the primary receptor activated by psilocybin, inhibits the production of the cytokine TNF‐α, which is an inflammatory cytokine. Therefore, an increase in activity at 5HT-2a corresponds to an anti-inflammatory effect.

Well I learned something.

Albeit yours in more in depth but looking it over quickly, at a glance it affirms what I mentioned before?
