thoughts on Israel - BDS etc
    #22561493 -

I would be interested to hear everyones views.

I personally support the BDS movement as Israeli impunity in commiting abuses has gone on too long with protection at the UN with the US veto at all resolutions condemning Israeli government activities. Therefore, the push has to come from grassroots movements to remind Israel that crimes are crimes and international law should be respected.

For those that do not know how it started i'll copy and paste from their organisations website..

Quote:
In 2005, Palestinian civil society issued a call for a campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it complies with international law and Palestinian rights. A truly global movement against Israeli Apartheid is rapidly emerging in response to this call. - See more at: http://www.bdsmovement.net/#sthash.BdB2W6Ee.dpuf

though i should point out it is both a method and an organisation.

If Israel is guilty of breaking international law, as you've repeatedly claimed, wouldn't the Arab run UN put sanctions on them?

The UN is a joke, Saudi Arabia is in the U.N.
despite all the fucked up shit Israel has done
they are still the most moral country in the region
Any country imposing any sort of Sharia Law deserves to be criticized and evaluated before Israel.

If people are against Israel they might as well be against every country in the world.

It's not Israels fault that their manipulations always work. I respect Israel, only wish western nations were half as smart and self interested. As an infidel, it simply makes no sense at all to have sympathy for Palestinians. Their absolute refusal to submit at all ever is admirable, only wish western nations could be half as resolved to defend their own interests. Only wish there was a western nation, rather than Israeli proxy nations. I am more interested in boycotting Halal products.

I agree with the statement that the UN is a joke, but how is Israel the most moral country in the region? they have a big share of human rights abuses, breaches of international law, and have an occupation which is not only illegal but basically permanent. So sharia law needs to be tackled before Israel? is there a problem with jewish religious law? why can't we tackle all the abuses at the same time?

Saudi Arabia is only in such a good position because of their wealth and the fact that the US is one of their closest allies and weapons suppliers.

i had to reread this a few times. I've never ever heard that one before. How, may I ask, is the UN in any way controlled by Arabs?? If anything, the UN is largely funded by the US and is a permanent member in the security council allowing resolutions condemning israel to be vetoed.

Israel has very much breached international law. Basic research on the subject will give you clear and conclusive information on the matter. I do understand that this isnt stuff that really hits the American media but that should be no excuse.

illegal aquisition of land through war - jerusalem, golan heights, west bank confiscations. a day after the attacks in paris, netanyahu has been pushing obama to recognise the annexation of the golan heights (occupied syria) as syria is no more. Also large oil deposits have been found in the Golan. International law says clearly that not only land should not be gained through war but the resources in occupied land should go to the original government. this is illegal to take.

illegal population transfer. this includes all aspects of demographic manipulations. settlements on occupied land are illegal and this is very clear under international law.

forbidding civilians to return to their homes after the 67 war or 47 explusions.

collective punishment is a crime. indiscriminate attacks on civilians is a war crime - gaza but all palestinians and arabs. Dahiya doctrine used in lebanon and gaza. btw gaza is accepted by the world including the USA as occupied land, even if the israels say they removed settlers, it is occupied by land sea and air.

destruction of holy places - threats and plans by some to destroy al aqsa, but besides this very few of the mosques in historic palestine are standing today, most were destroyed and the remaining ones are used for things like keeping animals.

attacks on hospitals is a war crime

international law states that if you occupy the land, you are responsible for providing for the humanitarian needs. i believe 95% of gaza water supply in not fit for human consumption. humanitarian organisations were not allowed into gaza like most things.

occupation is legally supposed to be temporary. not permanent in the pursuit of land grabs.

racism and apartheid

anyway, there are just a few. there are plenty more.

why would you rather boycott halal products? that kind of implies you care more about how an animal is killed than the abuses and killings against your fellow humans.

Yes there are differences between Halal and Kosher but these differences are not massive.

you respect israel? its very determined yes but it can only get away with this stuff because they are protected by the US and the UN and directly. It is still contrary to the law. Or is the law just for pussies? Do you believe in the constitution? wouldnt you think those that violate the constitution were wrong and should be sanctioned? what is the difference?

well i gota say, so far i have expected responses.. except for hostile universe's response from where i never know where he pulls this stuff!

I don't agree with Hamas's conduct in that case, shooting from a hospital is wrong and of course there are war crimes committed by Hamas. yes that is correct they have done that before but nevertheless to shell with tanks or strike with bomers/drones at a hospital is still not ok. it is illegal. Hamas shooting at the israeli army in gazan territory (completely LEGAL under international law to conduct armed resistance) is fine on a legal basis.

are you aware as well of the case of el-wafa hospital in gaza that was struck 15 times by direct israeli strikes? israeli fabrications were used to "justify" these attacks. there were no Hamas people in the building. the israeli military are targeting civilian infrastructure in accordance with dahiya doctrine mentality. this is a crime and is terrorism.

while both sides have commited crimes, thats for sure. Armed resistence is legal, gaza is under occupation but you dont even have to go to these cases to see crimes.

administrative detention with charge or trial is well documented. illegal

arrests of children is very much practiced. also illegal

land confiscations

resource appropriations

settlements

white phosphorous - chemical warfare on a civilian population

property destruction ( you see it happen for those family houses of palestinians who attack israelis but not for jewish settlers or israeli proper citizens who terrorise)

have you heard of the israeli military testimonies from Breaking the Silence ? Have you heard of +972 magazine? both are israeli and support the facts if you dont believe me. there are clear abuses and clear apartheid from the river to the sea.

ANYWAY hostileuniverse, you are awfully good at avoiding the question. you are free to question the crimes in the first place but the US government, even Israeli human rights organisations and the UN accept these acts as crimes. how is the UN run by Arabs????

Impunity must end. I pray to see Netanyahu in a war crimes tribunal. Normally, i would never wish harm upon anyone else but I wish Hell upon Netanyahu

UN general assembly urges Israel to end occupation of Palestinian territories
Good news, resolution calling for the end of the occupation. BUT we will see how far that goes, there have been numerous resolutions before now. Look at the number of countries in favour and who is against. When it comes to Security Council Resolutions, you just need one veto from the US to stop it passing.

I guess you listen to conservative news channels?  Personally, I prefer to know what's going on the world.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

As you should've learned by now, trickle down is what's failed us; we did very well from the 50's through the 70's.  We need a President who's willing to reverse trickle down.  Bernie is the only one who would.

so you think bringing back to 70-90% tax rates will lead to economic prosperity, correct?

No, tax rates won't really impact economic prosperity one way or another.  That's not the purpose of reversing trickle down.

The purpose is to get more money back to Main St by raising more revenue to reemploy people in Government offices to prevent the ridiculously long lines we've gotten used to with today's budget shortages, and to put more people to work at the same time.  The purpose is to stop the deficit, so the average tax payer isn't on the hook for so much interest.  The purpose is to provide more services for the middle class so our lives return to the standard we got used to before all the trickle down budget cuts, with cheap public college, well cared for National Parks, highly maintained roads, etc.

You may have the attention span of a fruit fly but just because you are sick of it doesnt mean it goes away. Or would you suggest that if a country can get away with abuses for long enough then we should just let it go? What does this say to other countries?

As Fal rightly says: we are all sick of it!

Quote:
I hardly hear about it from Israel or Palaestine

Well israel doesnt want to publicise its own abuses, it only uses its PR machine and the local and global media to keep its citizens supporting and to keep America supporting a twisted version of reality and therefore the occupation. Israel also enacts gagging laws quite frequently on its media and has a "hasbara" department or PR wing of the government to spin such events - not to mention (while mentioning) the fact that journalists rely on the IDF for their version of events portayed as truth.

palestines media is kept down by israel and complicit media organisations through misinformation, airstrikes on media offices in gaza, and direct attacks on press covering palestine issues (also a crime under international law).. So yes i imagine you dont hear that much. Most of the direct journalism from palestine is coming directly from the ground through social media/citizen journalism but if you are engulfed by the american media, you wont know it exists. You actually have to search for it to find it which very much indicates a complete asymmetry in each sides media capabilities - therefore the world gets a skewed perspective.
