American sanctions on Cuba?
    #2824926 - 06/24/04 07:05 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

You know, I don't even know what the sanctiuons are.

It's just an embargo isn't it? meaning that It is illegal for an American to buy Cuban goods or services.

Is it illegal to go to Cuba and spend money there?

Is it illegal to go to Cuba and spend money there? Illegal to travel to Cuba without State Dept. permission (scoff, f' them), yes. They occasionally grant permission for educational and like purposes. It's easy enough to get to Cuba via Canada, Barbados, etc. No direct flights from the U.S.A. (goes without saying I guess).

Is there even a legitimate reason to keep them anymore?

Yes. Castro is a poopy head.

And he doesn't allow a free market, so that's why it's illegal to buy stuff from his country.

Castro is one of the only, if not THE only, example of a country holding up against strong US pressure for an extended period of time. Living conditions have improved drastically since Castro came into power...which is probably the exact opposite of what the US leaders expect to happen when they put economic/military pressure on a country.

Castro's regime has stood up against all of this....

The US can't just ceed victory to him, now, can they? :smirk:

Castro's dictatorship sucks, and I'd like to see Cuba become a democracy, but I can't say I give a shit if they become capatalist or not.

Either way I can't see how the embargo could possibly be a good thing.

I agree with you 100% on that! I'm sure the only reason it still exists is so "they" don't have to admit defeat :smirk:

I don't have a source, but I don't doubt that things have improved for some segments of society. For many others, however, they've gotten worse.

There is no correlation between the two. Democracy is a method of decision-making while socialism is an economic system.

No specific source, just memories of something I've read. I did a little research and I'll retract the statement that living conditions have improved "drastically". It looks more like things improved for some parts of Cuban society but got a lot worse for others.

Though what can you expect from a country so small and cut off from the US :smirk:

I disagree. While democracy can be socialist, as most democracy are, they are not necessarily socialist.

I look at it like this:
No election + Govt controlled economics= Communism
Free election + Govt controlled economics = Socialism
Free election + market driven economics = capitalism
This one im not so sure about....
No election + market driven economics = ?

What do you think?

P.S. dont take my handel to seriously, its very facetious just like my personality.

No i dont think so.
I understand many people objection to his militant stance in the mideast....but do you actually think he want to overthrow elections and become "king" for life?  Ill give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your were being flippant....because usually you make good anti-bush arguments....

It would surprise me.

Thats a line that i dont think any american president has crossed, even the worst ones....

I fully expect Bush to out of office in at most 4 years and at least a few months....

Rest assured that if he or any president crosses that line, I, and many of my fellow americans (including soldiers) would be quick to take up arms against him.
