I'm volunteering at a hospice - any tips, experiences? help? * 1
    #22520123 -

So. I've been feeling pretty good lately, I have a lot of energy and I'm achieving a decent balance between my work and social life after a really rough two years, and I'm ready to start growing again now that I've rediscovered my 'sea legs' and stable again, so to speak. I am going to an orientation for a volunteer position at a hospice tomorrow after work, because I really just want to help people in the best way I can.

I don't know how well I'll handle it. I am at the moment, confident that I am okay with being in that environment where people I will be getting to know and keeping company will be on their way out, and I want to be there for them - but I'm a bit of a weenie, I've never worked or been in a medical environment at all, and I'm just curious if anyone here has experience with this topic?

The extent of my experience is honestly dealing with my grandmother's dementia and being able to engage her in conversation without upsetting the balance of whatever is going on in her brain. It takes some flexibility, because she's started thinking she's in highschool again, and you're not supposed to correct people with dementia because it is horribly unsettling to get snapped back to get snapped back to reality from those delusions, and because I think apart of them knows when they kind of start to break from reality when they're still mild to moderate..anyway, I'm digressing, I'm just a little nervous and was wondering about people's experiences with hospice care? Tips? Anything?

No tips, but I just wanted to say how commendable that is, trying to bring a ray of sunshine into an otherwise gloomy situation. Good luck in that.

Thankyou - I try, haha. I just think someone has to be there for those people and I think I can handle it, hopefully - dealing with my grandmother is really the driving force. Supposedly there is some training involved so I hope I feel a little more prepared than I do now.

Don't steal opiates, no matter how tempted you get.

It honestly would be a depressing job for me, but you seem like a really caring, resilient person. at least from what ive seen of your posts

I couldn't. I would hate myself. But that is a good tip haha.

It does seem depressing. I've kind of come to terms with death after struggling with the idea of it and the constant fear(thankyou, Alan Watts), the real reason I'm attracted to the hospice thing is because I hope I can help others struggling with those same existential issues find some kind of..calm, idk.

edit:

and thanks for the nice words - I always appreciate it.

I echo these sentiments. Respect to you, pirate-blues.

I have no more experience than you do, probably less, but imagining myself in your shoes, I would want to clear my mind as well as I could and focus on emanating spiritual vibrations and listening.

Best of luck, you're a true trooper. :sun:

Thankyou, I agree. I've kind of been trying. Honestly, I'm naturally a skeptic and an objective observer. I just feel a lot.

I also thought that I would bring books and read to them a little bit, maybe bring some low key music to play in the background and just kinda chill, you know?

Yeah, great idea, with the music and reading to them. I think any way you can connect with them is going to be beautiful and meaningful. I can't think of anything else, because arts and crafts might be too much trouble, and reading and music just about covers the engaging yet passive activities you can do in a hospital.

OH wait, chess! checkers? Hmm

This is gold, thankyou.

I'm terrible at chess, but I do have a set. I don't see my grandmother often enough, but the last time I saw her I had to take the day off to drive her to the doctor because there was a weird schedule change at the facility she lives at, she was so much more lucid than normal and I honestly think it's because I made a playlist of Frank Sinatra and others like him, I really think it brought her back. I'm gonna make it my mission to make all these people awesome mix cds.

I'll be sure to ask them at the orientation tomorrow.

(jk. i already just texted the lady running the thing while half drunk at midnight tonight to confirm I would be there hours and hours after she texted me, I'm trying to look squeaky clean here)

From everything I've gathered about your from your posts you seem like a sensitive person mentally. I don't know if you'll be able to handle it, death isn't pretty and being around it often leaves most people jaded in some way or another. That being said what you're doing is really admirable, noble even but try not to take everything that goes on in there with you when you go home at night. That's some seriously heavy shit.

psh. I do would never deprive any dying person of ketamine or anything that I know that I'd want if I was in their position. I could get that shit in my sleep if I wanted, and it would not involve stealing from dying people(..at least...not..to my knowledge? shit. now i'm gonna be thinking about my sources).

And yeah, it's not always easy dealing with the alheizmers. She recognizes me more often than my brother, and it's tough on him because he always got along with her more than I did as a kid. I was always too "Fresh" and needed an attitude adjustment for having any kind of opinion. I get along with her more now, which is horrible to say, but it's true.

I've been around death before. Seen random people die, violently, as a bystander(Thanks west philly!), strangers, a friend in a horseback riding accident, and lost others - though my life has been very easy, my family is very non-dysfunctional and mostly alive, and because most of the people I know have had so much more fucked up shit happen, I feel like any depression I feel is melodramatic, in comparison.

But you're right I am very sensitive, I cried tonight when I saw about news in Paris, actually, which probably makes me a huge pansy, but I think I manage to keep it under wraps or at least out of sight from others. That's the only reason I even begin to think I could do this..because it would be terrible to be in a hospice and have your volunteer who's supposed to be your buddy and who's supposed to chill and do fun stuff with you crying all the time - but you're right, I do worry I'll internalize it all and get all depressed.

I guess we'll find out? I'll try really hard not too. I try hard to be as logical as possible, but it doesn't always work.

more often than not they just want someone to be a friend, someone to listen to
them, some will be completely out of it but others will be lucid and talkative,
they want to share life with someone

you mentioned your grandmother and she could be reliving her days in highschool,
encourage it, ask her who that boy she liked so much is, ask her questions and let
her relive those moments with you. in her more lucid times ask many of the same
questions and carry this on to your volunteer work. I know a lot about my family
because I listened to my mom, my grandparents and even my great grandparents.
these are little glimpses of real history, daily life and a knowledge for some
that they arent going to be forgotten

yea idk i wouldn't think it'd be depriving dying people of it like if there was a surplus but idk dude yea thats hxc that u saw people get violently murdered on the streets n shit. im glad i never saw anyone die like that, that sux. but yea death and altheizmers is trash im gonna be so sad when everyone i know dies. like if my parents ever asked me who i was nd shit i dont think i'd be anything near able to deal with it i

pris, this helps so much.

I know so little because I've just never asked, and I'm just realizing that now.
