ID request please - gymnopilus?

Habitat:
Northeast USA - on a patch of grass in a wooded area by a walking path.

Gills:
Gills (not pores), yellow, attached, still covered by a veil. They don't seem to run down the stipe at all but they are attached directly to it (not free). It's difficult to see.

Stem:
Also yellow, just a bit paler than the cap. The largest ones are 6cm in length (w/o cap) but some are much, much smaller (1cm). The stem of biggest one is 3.5cm wide at its fattest point. You can see in the photos that they are swollen just below the middle. Internally the stems are solid and uniform, and the same color. Not spongy but firm.

Cap:
3cm across, pale to golden yellow, smooth and a bit soft in texture (like "peach fuzz" texture - very light), dry. They are round and incurved but they are young, basically still buttons.

Spore print color:
I left the most mature cap sit for about 20 hours but no print :frown: I imagine they are too young.

Bruising:
Light bruises leave a sort of greenish sheen, but the more solid bruises are brown.


Overall, the color is a uniform pale yellow. They have an odor for sure, though it's not strong or overwhelming. Almost like putrid fruit but much more pleasant. Like a frothy fruit alcohol or something. I tasted a bit and the flavor was strong and not tasty. I'm struggling to describe it.

I study biology and am beginning to specialised in mycology, so I'm excited to see any mushroom and take a sample to test my IDing skills. But these have me stumped. There were two bundles of them in the grass, and I took the older looking bunch. I meant to take only a few but then the whole dang bundle came up! They were all joined together under the soil. I feel really badly about it, seeing how young they are :frown: I left the other group of them but they're being decimated by slugs.

I'm thinking (okay, okay, hoping :smile: ) they're Gymnopilus junonius. I've been worried they might be jacks but the gills aren't right (tough again because they're young) and because of the veil - as far as I have read, jack-o-lantern fungi don't have a veil, but please correct me if I'm wrong. If only I could get a spore print, I'd be much more confident! If they're gyms I'll go back and grab the other patch before someone else does (or before the slugs finish them off)!

I'd call those Gymnopilus junonius s.l.

Thank you, that's exactly what I was hoping for! I had a great day hunting yesterday regardless but this is the icing on the cake. And I feel better about picking them since they certainly won't go to waste :wink:

It's possible they are one of the inactive members in the species complex, though your location points to them being active. If bruising doesn't show on the pins, try putting them in the fridge overnight.

You coulda had a patch that returns every year for you at that same time but you went and destroyed the mycelium ripping it out the way you did. Shoulda cut the ones that looked grown enough by their stem or just simply pinch them apart but too late now lol

Oh damn! I really only meant to grab a few but the whole thing kind of popped out at me. At least I left the other group of them. I'm more used to amanitas and boletes that practically leap into your hand

Good tip, I'll try that! Some of the small ones have a greenish hue around their bruises but definitely better safe than sorry.

Depending where this other group of gyms are you coulda damaged that network too. If its a totally seperate location you're obviously ok but if not then cross ur fingers bro
