liquid innoculation with which species ?

I have tried to make liquid innoculation with following species:
- pleurotus pulmonaris
- flammulina velutipes
- p. azurescens
- shiitake
- hypholoma capnoides

either I have tried out the honey or a dextrose/yeast mixture for the liquid broth and inncoulated either WBS or sawdust spawn or beer soaked cardboard.
This were the results:
- pleurotus pulmonaris: mycelium on WBS ok / not tried to innoculate sawdust spawn / cardboard worked very well
- flammulina velutipes: mycelium on WBS ok / mycelium on sawdust spawn
- p. azurescens: no growth on WBS / not tried to innoculate sawdust spawn
- shiitake: not tried WBS / no growth on sawdust spawn
- hypholoma capnoides: innoculated sawdust and WBS but too early for results

It migth be that the innoculation of some species failed due to my lack of experience. So I wonder what are the experiences of other growers ? What did you use for liquid innoculum, which species did you innoculate on which substrate and was it successful ?

If you could explain your procedures maybe some one may find out what is going wrong. The Shiitake should have took to the sawdust. H"ow do you make your liquid innoculant?

I use a sort of liquid method. . .it doesn't involve growing the organism out in liquid culture, but still provides some of the benefit of liquid innoculum. In essence, a small chunk of colonized agar [or mycelium scraped off the surface] is added to a sterile tube of sterile water [usually about 10 mL in a 15 mL tube]. This is shaken, shaken, and shaken again, then used as soon as possible. There are better ways, but this is easy and has worked with every species I've tried--much better take-off than the agar chunk(s) alone.

I mix either honey with water ( details see honey tek ) or mix 15 g dextrose and 1 gramm yeast with 0.5 liter water and sterilize it ( 20 minutes/ 121 degree Celsius ) and let it cool over night. Then I add a piece of mycelium to the broth ( in my pressure box ). Then I stir it with a stirrer for 4 - 10 days depending on species at about 24 degree Celsius. When I see that there is enough mycelium in the bottle I add about 20 - 30 ml to a jar of spawn. That's it.

I've used PDY for shiitake and it worked fine....

So at least shiitake should grow in liquid medium. How about P.azur ? Any experiences with other species ?
