WTF Android Apps? * 2
    #22198461 - 09/06/15 05:55 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

So every app I've considered installing recently demands access to my entire phone and the inside of my asshole too, it seems.

My auto insurance company has a great app, but it wants access to my camera, my personal photos, and my phone book. Why does an insurance app need to see my pictures? Why does it need to turn on my camera or see who the people I call are? I won't install anything that unnecessarily intrusive, which disqualifies just about everything.

Any Android geeks out there know how I can block apps from accessing things they require access to before they will even install.

This sucks. Does Apple do that shit too?

it probably wants to be able to take and upload pictures of accidents, add phone numbers to call if you get in a wreck and maybe a few other handy things.  its the same thing if not worse with ios, you just don't get the upfront warning.  if you are rooted you can install xposed and some modules that will let you put your phone on lock down.  been a while since i did it so i don't remember the exact details.

edit: xposed + xprivacy.  you install apps like normal but they stay locked out until you give them access.

I forget the name of the app, but a user here told me about a firewall app for android that should allow you block data from being sent/received for certain apps. You could always do that and then just unblock it when something comes up.

Unfortunately, most apps are useless without networking.

Looks like I'm going to have to root my phone and I really didn't want to go there. Oh well, thanks for the suggestions! TY

You have to remember that the way the app security works is the app cannot access the device at all without telling you during that install point where it lists what it needs access to.  As for why, your insurance company probably has built in claim filing and stuff and in order for their app to take photos of accidents for example, or whatever you would be filing a claim on, it needs access to your camera.  It also can't upload or save those photos without access to your photos directory.. etc etc..  Its not like the app wants to just randomly turn on your camera and take nudes of you when you least expect it, its just part of the software's functionality.

A lot of times that warning looks a LOT worse then it actually is because the developers are trying to offer features inside their software so each extra thing it does usually requires some other part of the phone or hardware.  Like facebook or facebooks chat.  Because it can send / take / upload photos to friends through messages, it will say it needs access to your camera, etc etc etc.

It's not just the insurance app. I kinda get why it wants to see my pictures and turn on my camera, but there are others like a protractor app I thought would be useful when I need to measure, for example, the slope of a staircase or something along those lines. That app wanted to see my photos too and I can't see why other than just because they know that most people will approve any permission request an app they want demands.

Well what does the app do that it would need in some form to save pictures?  When it says it needs access to 'your pictures' it doesnt mean the app just wants to access your selfies and nudes for some unknown reason.  It just means the app needs access to that folder or the program/services that controls pictures.  I know what you mean though I feel the same way everytime I'm installing something and the permissions it wants seem crazy, but they word it that way specifically to make it seem extreme so the end user knows just how far that software COULD be going, so they dont get taken advantage of.

If you are concerned about stuff an app requests, you should search the net about that app and see because you are not the only person who worries about this stuff, so a lot of time the developers of the app will write a full explanation of the what and why their app needs access to X Y and Z, or end users figure out exactly what it is doing on the back end and can explain why the software needs all this crazy access.

which phone do you have.  depending on which phone you have and where you got it from you might want to just go ahead and dive in and install a custom rom on it.  custom rom + the xposed and xprivacy app is teh ultimate way to debloat and lock down a phone.  last time i checked there was also a way to pirate xprivacy unless you don't mind paying for the app.

The upcoming release of Android M will quench your thirst for better app privacy control but if you can't wait, go get CyanogenMod!

It's a custom rom which already has excellent privacy controls from which Google actually copied their idea.

depending on which phone he has, cyanogenmod may not be an option.  for most samsung and htc phones it is either not an option or its a shitty option.

CyanogenMod is never a shitty option since it's always better than the pre-installed ROM filled with bloatware and a lack of privacy controls for example such as in this case right here. Furthermore, CM runs very well on most Samsung phones.

The S6 isn't supported yet by CM. Might come in a few months though.

thats the whole reason i switched to htc.  samsung phones are getting harder and more complicated to root or rom and the rom list are shrinking.  in the mean time htc will warranty a phone with a rom and give you the  unlock code for it.

that would be the best place to start finding out everything about your phone and what options you have with it.  if their are any updates your phone is trying to take, avoid them until you find out what you want to do.  updates make modding harder.
