Effects pedals
    #2215869 - 01/02/04 11:59 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Which effects should every rock guitarist have available to them? The main one I can think of, besides distortion, is a wah pedal. I'm thinking at some point I should probably get a delay pedal as well. What do you use in your setup?

I would add to the list a graphic EQ/tuner, chorus, and you already mentioned the delay pedal...Also, check for the wah pedals that also double as a volume pedal. those are handy. And if you have this long chain of pedals, you might want to end it with a noise gate to kill some of the artifacts.

This is the pedal board we use on the line 6 amps. It has 4 channel switches, wah pedal and volume pedal, effects on/off switches, delay..reverb..chorus..flange..etc...

I was never one for effects pedals, if you want the best quality sound reinforcement you gotta go rack units. For your compression/noise gate/limiter.. sonic enhancers.. power conditioners.. EQs and Pre-amps.. that really cleans up the sound.. but that's when you're talking serious band stuff.

For home applications your best bet is getting a (good quality) multi effects pedal, with wah and all that stuff built in. those Zoom pedals are decent enough, I think...

..unless you want to build a big effect pedal rack that you will constantly have to change batteries and replace cables and lug around and tweak.

Every Rock guitarist should have a TC Electronics Fireworx. it's astonishing.

soundmind's guitar setup =

ESP F-200 ~ Danelectro Fab Tone ~ Budda Tube Overdrive ~ Line 6 DL-4 Delay Modeler ~ MOTU 828 mkII Firewire ~ Mac G4.
ESP F-200 ~ Roland GK2A MIDI Pickup ~ Roland GR-33 Guitar Synth ~ Motu 828 ~ G4

so far i have been using Bombfactory, Nautilus and Waves 4 plug-ins on the guitar w/ amazing results,
but i'm gonna have to focus on a live rig soon and will need dedicated fx hardware.
TC Electronic's G-Force is by far the best Guitar DSP box out there for the $.

I LOVE the line 6 stomps...
My rig goes somethin like this-
Les Paul ~into~ Boss Tuner ~ Line 6 Amp Modeler ~ Line 6 Filter Modeler (for those fucked up monophonic synth sounds) ~ Line 6 Delay Modeler (best pedal I own) ~ Crybaby Wah

I've gone overboard with the line 6's, but the green Delay Modeler is very versatile, and it has a 14 second loop station in it as well. Tap tempo- the works. That's almost key for playing with a band.

one of the most overlooked aspect of using affects is the order in which they are set. always start with the wah. distortion and chorus should be used in the effects loop section of ur amp, the rest can come before the preamp. so... for example: guitar~wah~delay~input: effects loop: chorus~envlope filter~distortion:close effects loop:

in the effects loop, different arrangements can change the sound drastically.

Also remember that the more pedals you are running the more noise you get from the amp. So it would be a good idea to buy combo pedals, or an effects processor that has everything built in.
