Tuition is already going through the roof and will continue to do so until the government says enough is enough.

I just think the NCAA is taking in way more money then it should. Why is the burden on the students, when college sports are obviously extremely profitable.  A 5 g stipend isn’t that much, especially when you look at the revenue major college stars provide their schools. I think it was in SI that Manziel brought 150 mill to A&M

I know its not exactly applicable in this situation but in Torts its called a post remedial measure.

The NLRB is the government and 1 guy just shook the world.  I have very little expectation that this will stand.  I can't believe the players would want this.  If they consider an athletic scholarship to be employment then they need to be taxed on their income.  I cannot believe that this is ignored in the discussion.

Damn good point. That would suck ass to have to pay taxes on 40g or whatever the scholarships are worth. I don’t really know how the NLRB works. Is it like the circuit courts where activist judges make rulings only to get overturned by the higher courts?

Oh oops missed that part. Honestly I’ve never even heard of that degree before now. Sounds pretty interesting, I seriously considered Environmental Science and took a few of those classes before I sold out and went Business. I like Ecology, Geology, and all that kind of stuff a lot.

I think Northwestern players are voting on Friday. Mike Golic on Mike and Mike predicts they will vote it down 2 to 1. I don't know if an upper middle class school was the ideal first test case. Unions appeal to class consciousness and I don't think NW students identify with workers socially.

The interesting thing is that by some strange coincidence? the NCAA has picked this particular time to address the needs of "student athletes". All of a sudden football players are allowed to eat as much as they want (325 pound guys) and the NCAA is proposing a compromise on transfer students; they lose a year but then they gain a year of eligibility on the back end. The push to cover all medical seems like a no brainer. and that should pass under any plan. It's expensive but the schools make millions and its difficult to make an argument against it.

I pretty much think it would have to start at some kind of brainy school. The ghetto class doesn't buy that shit because they all think they're going to the NFL.

Ya but Northwestern seems bourgeois as fuck. Its a super exclusive private school. UC Berkley would be ideal.

They have a football team but they don't call it Berkeley. It's Cal Golden Bears. I think they are trying to avoid the Berkeley hippie dippie protest reputation. The football players have the highest dropout rate in the PAC 12.
Cost of schooling is 33k in state 56k out of state. They are as super exclusive as Northwestern.

The interesting thing about Berkeley and Stanford is that all white non-Jewish students are admitted through affirmative action. If they chose the most academically deserving applicants the entire student body would be Asian with some Jewish.

The other thing to remember in terms of this vote on the football union, is that the Chicago area is pro-union. The AFL-CIO has recruited hundreds of thousands of new members in Southern and mid Cali, bucking national trends, but they are almost entirely Hispanic.

I actually looked that up and you are exactly correct

Although it is the AFL CIO site I'm sure they aren't lying about the number of new members.  I also don't think this is about Chicago.  Very few of the players are from there.

that sounds like complete bullshit (affirmative action part)

Ya they are exclusive by how good of a school they are but Berkley is one of the most liberal areas in the country and known for that. This girl i know has a husband that went to northwestern and he is religious and republican as fuck and makes it seem like the school is pretty conservative, in stark contrast to UCB.

Cal bears were good for a while back when they had Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch’s retarded ass.

I don’t know all I’m saying is that I know University of Chicago produced Milton Friedman, and a few of my professors got their PHD’s there and they are mostly conservative. Im not saying thats a bad thing necessarily, but the players at Northwestern voting that down would not surprise me one bit. I bet their business school is conservative as fuck.

I can accept the argument that NW football team doesn't have much to do with Chicago.

As far as the last post goes:

The thing about white non jewish being admitted to Berkeley and Stanford because of affirmative action for whites came from an interview with the Berkeley admissions director. I don't know exactly what is going on at Stanford, but Berkeley is The flagship public school for the country's biggest state and the public would not be pleased if they just went by test scores and admitted %90 Asian. Just as Harvard, Princeton and Yale have a lot of affirmative action slots for the rich, even if they are not qualified for an elite academic university.

Although Berkeley may be more so, all big time college campuses are liberal. Almost every university professor outside of business and engineering is liberal.
The University of Texas is liberal. There are no conservative schools in Illinois, except for some religious ones.

The University of Chicago. Small school.  Known for great professors. They have almost no undergraduate students. They don't give a shit about undergraduates. Of the few that are there, Milton Friedman plays no real role in campus life.

After posting I thought, wait a minute what about BYU. They could be a legit non-liberal university. They would never be the first to vote in a union.

Here in the land of Lincoln, all we know about BYU is its Mormon and Jim McMahon set all kinds of NCAA passing records there. After practice he had to go out drinking with townies because none of the students could party with him.

I don't think Notre Dame would be very conservative despite their image. They recruit more players from Chicago than Indiana, and anyways Catholicism is a great drinking religion.

I guess there are some Baptist schools in the South that are big enough to qualify as major that are not liberal. They chase women a lot but they are supposed to marry them.

Ya BYU is conservative as fuck. I bet a few southern schools are too, or at least conservative as fuck as far as colleges go. I mean conservative in Ideology not drinking and chasing women because that even happens at BYU.

Northwestern voted today. It didn't sound as though they would get a majority for the union, according to a few players who spoke out. The administration and the coaching staff campaigned heavily against the union, which they have the right to do. Yesterday Northwestern filed an appeal with the NLRB against the process, and the vote totals will not be released until that appeal is finished. If the vote were to go through, the University has several avenues of appeal. I think it goes to an administrative law judge first, then it can be appealed at the U.S. Appellate division.

The union process seems a strange and impractical, if even legal, way for college football players to effect change. The lawsuits look more promising.

Either way the NCAA is acting like they have something to worry about. Actually they are acting like they had independently chosen this moment to put through major reforms. Mike Golic interviewed the president of the NCAA, and Golic asked him if he expected anyone to believe that the NCAA was making these reforms independently, without coercion at this particular time. The President said it was true, and had been in the planning stages for a long time, but no he didn't expect anyone to believe it.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13455477/nlrb-says-northwestern-players-cannot-unionize

Quote:
In a surprising decision that amounts to punting on the issue, the National Labor Relations Board on Monday declined to assert jurisdiction in the historic Northwestern University case after football players had been deemed to be employees by the regional NLRB director last year.

Effectively, the decision is a major victory for Northwestern and the NCAA. Analysts expected the five-member NLRB to either back or reverse the decision, but instead, the board exercised its discretion not to take charge of the case and dismissed the representation petition filed by the College Athletes Players Association, which had worked with then-quarterback Kain Colter and the Wildcats football team.

The articles I read gave it an even more negative spin. At any rate the NLRB voted unanimously, and even if the vote went the other way that would have just pushed it up to the federal courts.

A lot of good points were brought up on how there would be no way to do this uniformly. Northwestern is a private school playing in a public school conference. In South Carolina it's not even legal for public employees to unionize.

The NLRB did say that their ruling did not decide the issue for all time and its not dead, but realistically it is a dead issue.

I don't see why the issue of uniformity is relevant. All movements have to start somewhere.

Public employees can't unionize in South Carilina? They need to look into a little thing called civil disobedience.
