Also, I'd like some feedback on why you believe that it should/should'nt be and who should regulate it.
Should smoking be banned in bars, restaurants?

Well, even tho I am not a smoker I chose that it be up to the tavern owner, not the gov't. Also, I really don't know for a fact the health risk of passive smoking.

Ive tended bar for 3 years, and all my roomies and most of my friends are huge smokers of both tobacco and herb. Therefore, I believe that I have been exposed to a way higher amount of 2nd-hand smoke than most of the population, and I have to say I really dont feel the so-called affects-- coughing, weezing, ect...

It does annoy me tho when a lit ciggeratte's smoke is drawn right up into my nose, and tobbaco smells god-awful once lit.

Here in California, smoking is not allowed in bars/restaraunts or anything public for that matter.

However, going to the bars in my area, there are tons of smokers in there, smoking away.

I think its up to the owner or bartenders of the bar. I think it would really hurt business if people were not allowed to smoke inside...It would be great if there was a back area where people could smoke outside or something. But, just think of the traffic jams of people going in and out the front door, when there is aline just to get in to smoke.

The libertarian in me says let the bar owner decide.

Smokers are their own worst enemies however. Chucking butts out car windows, dumping ashtrays in parking lots and not asking those around them if smoke bothers them.

Those things leave me thinking that since smokers bring their troubles on themselves..... fuck em.

(I realize that not all do those things)

Plus, health insurance should not cover smoking related illnesses. You brought your problems on yourselves.

luvdem-- very true about the smokers being their own worst enemy....
I can recall countless times having to calm down patrons who politely ask someone smoking near them to stop blowing the smoke in their direction, only to get a smart ass or pissed off response.

I specifically remember a pretty good cat-fight becuz of rude smoking habits.
It is the smokers right to pollute their bodies however they choose, I think the right ends when the smoke starts annoying other people.

I guess the bottom line for tavern owners is to invest in smoker-eaters. They seem to work very well and can keep smokers and non-smokers alike content.

Tavern owner.

That way that could be non-smoking establishments and smoking establishments. If you are bothered by smoke go to a non-smoking place. If you aren't go to a smoking place. This gives everyone the proper amount of freedom I think.

Annoying is a pretty subjective thing. As a smoker I have been subjected to non-smokers "rights" and times when they were pretty much "in my face" about it. I found that pretty annoying. And I go out of my way not to offend anyone with my cigarettes even smoking outside in freezing winter at houses where no one had a problem with it.

My ex-brother-in-law used to complain that the anchovies on my pizza were "annoying him". I should have beat his ass just for principle before my sister got wise and divorced his ass.

Anyone who doesn't like anchovies needs an ass kicking just on general principle.

The owner should have the decision.  In the ideal setting, proper ventiliation could be installed so that the air is replaced enough that the smoke does not linger.  Negative ion generators deal great with smoke.

I remember a comment I read awhile ago, went something like this.  You like to smoke cigarettes, the after effect of you smoking your cigarette is smoke.  I like to drink beer, the after effect of drinking beer is having to piss.  You can smoke around me and make me breath in your smoke if I can stand on a chair and piss on you.

I don't even go to bars anymore because of the goddamned cigarette smell, tho bars / clubs now have a non-smoking area that is vented enough that you can't smell the nasty carginogenic smoke.

Good Poll

There is a great steak joint in my town that has HEPA filters that filter the entire atmosphere of the place 6 times every hour.  The smoke goes straight up to the ceiling and into the filters.

This didn't satisfy some people and now there is a smoking "section" even though you couldn't detect the smoke before.  These types of people piss me off.

I think smokers should start a chain of restaurants and bars where if you don't smoke you cannot enter.  You must smoke at least one cigarette or something if you eat or drink there.  That would keep out the "unsavory" types.

enimatpyrt --- good analogy (even if it wasnt yours)

Mr_Mushrooms--- You sound like a Denis Leary rant I have on CD.
He rants about having his own bar where you are required to smoke, can only listen to the Rolling Stones, and you have to "pull up your goddamn pants"

I agree with you, some people can be total pussies about it, HEPA filters or smoke eaters definitely suffice in clearing the air of lingering smoke. The only times I encountered friction between smokers and non-smokers was while working in a bar that had nothing but ceiling fans (which did a good job of keeping smoke clouds low enough so everyone could breathe it in....)

Good rant, I wish I would have heard it.

Well, before April I am giving up ciggies for good.  I am wondering if I will change my tune then.

Truthfullly I have never seen someone actually rude about their smoke.  I must hang with the wrong crowd.

I can understand them not wanting smoking in restaurants, but bars? There's already people drinking hard liquor in there, so why not add another drug to the mix? As for second-hand smoke, sure it's harmful, but you probably won't notice any major effects on your health unless you live with someone who smokes inside the house. A little temporary exposure probably won't affect you that much.

Mr. Mush-- Yeah, I guess in the college bars or the 20 something bars ive noticed no one really giving a shit.

I managed a jazz club for 2 years and it was full of yuppies, executives and 50 year olds who loved to speak thier mind when they were drunk. I guess getting your ass kissed all day at work makes you feel you should never hear "no" anywhere else.... I was required to take the side of the smokers tho, the owner smoked and so did most of the regulars so she always was like "you dont like, leave...."

Oh... and the denis leary rant is called "I love to smoke" I think its off of his Lock n Load album. download it, me thinks youll like it.

second hand smoke isnt harmful but god its disgusting.

but no government has the right to take the choice away from the establishment
owner. if you have a problem with smokers, go some place that doesnt allow them.

or get over it.

Fucking lame. I just wrote a paragraph and the push of a wrong button erased it all.

Anyway when they show how many people die a year from 2nd hand smoke they include all deaths where the person lived or worked with smokers. If a woman smoker killed her husband with a gun they would count it.

Also when you think 2nd hand smoke you think they mean the smoke coming out of one's lungs but when they use studies to show how its worse they use the smoke coming off the cig. so its never been filtered.

They use a bunch of tricky tatics to make it seem worse just like the tatics used on most illegal drugs.

Smoking costs the NHS between ?1.4bn and ?1.7bn a year, according to the most recent research.

The UK Government should raise ?8.9bn from tobacco duty in 1998/99.

I'm a Tobacco company whore though, so perhaps im biased...  :alert:

ActualyPenn and Teller just covered this on Bullshit the other night on Showtime. They showed that there is not so far any unrefutable evidence that shows 2nd hand smoke causes cancer. I do think it is a horrible nussance though but you expect it in a bar.

The city I live in has banned smoking in bars. The bars responded by closing in their outdoor patios to provide a sort of semi-enclosed area for smokers.

As I don't smoke, this doesn't really bother me...but I still think it should be up to the individual owner/operator. It sure does suck for all the smokers to have to go outside in the winter.

I went to Casino De Montreal a few weeks ago.. last time I was there winning $1000, getting drunk for cheap, and smoking boges at the slots. This time, I lost all my money, had a horrible hangover so I didn't drink, and had to go into a really stale lounge to smoke. I felt like such an outcast.
