Healthy 24-year-old granted right to die in Belgium * 2
    #21935153 - 07/12/15 09:18 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I don't know about this one. One hand I support people's right to die. But this fucking kid has no idea what her life might be like in 10 years. It used to not be called depression but youthful melancholy and it was generally acknowledged that people grew out of it. Now no one tells patients that depression may not be a life long affliction, everyone wants them on pills forever.
Also says she tried everything but I wonder if she tried ECT. And really why not do it yourself, why should someone else have to feel guilty for giving you a death shot? M3E

Healthy 24-year-old granted right to die in Belgium

Doctors in Belgium are granting a 24-year-old woman who is suffering from depression but is otherwise healthy the right to die as she qualifies for euthanasia under the Belgian law, even though she does not have a terminal or life-threatening illness.

The 24-year-old woman, known simply as Laura, has been given the go-ahead by health professionals in Belgium to receive a lethal injection after spending both her childhood and adult life suffering from "suicidal thoughts", she told local Belgian media.

Laura has been a patient of a psychiatric institution since the age of 21 and says she has previously tried to kill herself on several occasions. She told journalists: "Death feels to me not as a choice. If I had a choice, I would choose a bearable life, but I have done everything and that was unsuccessful." The date of Laura's death is yet to be decided.

Belgium passed a law to legalise euthanasia in 2002, the second country in the world to do so after the Netherlands. The law states that Belgian doctors can "help patients" to end their lives if they freely express a wish to die because they are suffering from intractable and unbearable pain.

Dr Marc Van Hoey, a general practitioner and president of the Right to Die Association in northern Belgium, is a vocal supporter of the legislation. Van Hoey told the Independent newspaper that he believes that sometimes euthanasia is the kindest option. "I've seen quite a lot of persons dying in - how do you say in proper English - agony?" Van Hoey said. "I never saw that when I gave someone euthanasia he or she asked for."

Over the past few years there has been a sharp increase in the number of euthanasia cases in Belgium. In 2013, there were 1,807 deaths recorded compared with 1,432 in 2012. More than half of last year's cases were patients aged 70 and over but there are increasing numbers of young people requesting to die legally, with the majority citing depression as their "intractable and unbearable pain."

However, not everyone is in favour of the law. Carine Brochier, a project manager with the Brussels-based European Institute of Bioethics, tells Newsweek that she believes too many people are dying as a result of Belgium's liberalised euthanasia laws.

She argues that many people who experience psychological suffering and treatable mental illnesses may be wrongly given the go ahead for euthanasia because "there is absolutely no way for healthcare professionals to measure another person's mental suffering to decide if they should receive euthanasia."

"Euthanasia is not the answer to all human suffering," Brochier continues. "We need to develop better palliative care for people," something she believes Belgium is not currently doing.

Earlier this year in February, the parliament in Belgium passed a bill also allowing euthanasia for terminally ill children without any age limit, by 86 votes to 44. The vote makes it the first country in the world to have legalised euthanasia without an age limit.

In the Netherlands, the first country to legalize euthanasia, sick children are allowed to request it, but only if they are 12 years or older.

As of June 2015, euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia and Luxembourg.

If people want to die, they should be able to die...

It should however require extensive psychological evaluations like gender-reassignment

My friend worked at a mental hospital where a lady was a patient only because she wanted to die. She tried hanging herself, drowing herself in the toilet, and cutting/stabbing herself with anything she could while she was in there. The hospital had to have someone with her at all times watching her to make sure she wouldn't kill herself.

I think someone like that should be allowed to die. None of us know exactly what the 24 year old was going through, bug if its anything like that, I think she should have the right.

Fuck suicide.

Alright, sure, I have no right saying that there are better options...I've never been in a position where I was ready to off myself.

But what the hell...

If it brings someone peace or whatever, then okay...fine.
I've lost a friend to suicide, and I wish he were here every day.
I guess I'm just being selfish.

This stuck out at me in the story. It is obviously wrong. Death is certainly a total end to any human's suffering. Its also the end to their happiness, future, and everything else. But its certainly a total end to suffering.

I suggest that if this 24 year old girl has attempted to receive treatment without benefit and is crippled with treatment resistant depression she is suffering incurably and should qualify as a candidate for euthanasia. How is it really any different from suffering from cancer pain?

I've never understood why it's such a big deal to let someone end their life if that's what they truly want. It's their life, they should be able to decide. The only time it even sorta makes sense to me is if they're a parent and responsible for a small child or something. But even then it still doesn't. Is it really best to force someone in that mind state to live and raise their child? Who is benefiting from that? It's certainly not the child.

What a stupid selfish bitch she is, people like that piss me off. She should sign a consent form for her body to be sent to me in a package so I can fuck the shit out of it while she burns in hell.  :godfuckingdammit: Death is NOT a fucking choice, otherwise we would be able to die just by closing our eyes and saying "Ok, I'm ready to die."

Whatever, if you wanna die then go ahead and be my guest, cure the overpopulation will you?

when you're ready, you're ready.

some times the end of a struggle spent years in the making is to just let it all go.

every sentient being has the right to make the choice to die, whether it be a shotgun to the dome piece or a quick leap under a train.

she just found a way to do it less painfully, if anything having this done in a clinical setting would grant a bit of closure, else a random attempt gone successful.

i mean like if she truly wanted to die, and this clinic of euthenisa didn't take her, eventually she'll get her hands of some drugs or a gun or a bridge that will take her just fine.

this was a good thing. however unpopular that opinion may be

People have a right to end their lives. It's their life. This is just like how people have a fundamental right to decide what goes into their own body in terms of drugs. It's all the same issue: freedom over your own body to control your own life and make your own decisions.

So many angles... Too bad the poor girl couldn't find something to live for. I've been in a depressive state before and I get where she's coming from, but for me the world is just to awesome to stay sad in for very long; too awesome to pass up. I'm sorry she never got to experience it fully. Maybe on the next run.

It's nobodies business but her own.

If that's her decision to be "selfish" as so many people label suicide to be, then she has the choice of free will to do just that.

And no one is in any place to call people who decide to opt out selfish, the same could be said about you.

"You're selfish for thinking they should do as you do."
