oyster mushrooms
    #2186786 -

Went hunting for mushrooms in the middle of November with friends. Before we left we found these growing in the neighbors yard. they were growing on some kind of tree root and stump.

This is a clone on agar that started fruiting. The agar was malt, yeast and maple syrup .

I cloned it directly onto grain when I first found it. Last weekend I drilled some holes in 3 logs and innoculated them with that. What was left about a cup and half of grain i added to pasturized cottonseed hulls, boil then simmerfor twenty minutes and drain cool and add spawn.

If your growing oysters, cotton seed hulls are lot easier to work with than straw. They cost about 15 dollars for 45 pounds, enough to grow a lot of mushrooms.

The oysters added directly to the grain took a long time to get started so I did some on agar then grain when i'll post more pictures when i can upload some more.

The large bag is oysters growing on cotton seed hulls from the oysters cloned directly on rye , about 4 to 1 cotton seed hulls to rye. The jar is oysters on birdseed from an agar transfer. The small bag is about a tablespoon of spawn with coffe grounds.

This is a picture of king trumpet on cottonseed hulls in a bag and beech on cottonseed hulls in a cut off bottle. The king trumpet grows as fast and smells just like the oyster when its growing.

The beech mushroom I threw in the bottle just to see what happens. I grew the beech spawn to inocculate logs and had some left over.

Both were grown on PDYA from store bought mushrooms and tranfered to rye.

They are really nice I think, because they were on burried wood.

Good luck with your clone.

ragadinks I'm not sure what wood they are growing on, but they fruited this spring also along with some mica caps and psatherella so i'd guess maple, but it might be something else, I'll see if anyone knows what tree it was.

Will cubensis grow on cottonseed hulls?

Mica caps and psathyrella usually grow on wood chips.
There was probably wood buried in the soil where your oysters came out.

I doubt it. It's more suitable for wood loving species.

What really strikes me at the pictures above is that the mycelium does grow above the agar like kind of "twigs". What species do you think it is ? P.pleurotus or P.ostreatus ?

It's ostreatusI think. The twiggy growth is caused by high CO2 levels.

Probably not well and they'd probably contaminate easily.

Pleurotus is the genus. i9'm not aware of any Pleurotus pleurotus, but i may be wrong.

his mushroom definately looks to belong in the P. oystreatus group, but this group actualy encompases several closely related species, and from a single picture we will not be able to tell the exact species.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Sorry, I have mixed up Pleurotus pleurotus with Pleurotus pulmonaris. Was a syntax error ...
