A question on yeast, agar, and liquid tek

Would Fleischmann's active dry yeast like they have at the grocery work as the yeast additive in agar, like MEA? Also I've read that yeast can be a contam in liquid teks like karo or dextrose water, would it be good to use agar without yeast added when you're using it to start a liquid culture or does it matter? Any advice on the safe storage and handling of filled agar plates would be appreciated as well.

You'd better use nutritional yeast or brewer's yeast. Not active dry yeast, it is still alive. After pouring plates seal them with plastic wrap store either in fridge or room temp.

dammit, I knew something was wrong. It never really specifically said what kind of yeast to use in any of the stuff I've read, where do you get the correct kind? I went to a brewing supply store but they had a plethora of yeast, what am I looking for?

I bet they have some yeast nutrient. As far as I know, nobody's tried that yet but I bet it would work.

Any yeast should work as long as you kill the yeast by boiling it.

There is alot of nutritional yeast called brewer's yeast around here.

You can use regular yeast -- if you P.C. it properly it should kill all of it. It's not nessecary, though, and probably better to go without, IMO. You don't NEED it -- it's just to provide extra vitamins like thiamine and biotin, but you don't need it.

thanks for the help, could dextrose be used instead of yeast or is that pointless to mix with malt etract?

as there both sugars, its prob not worthwhile. You could do it
as long as you add less malt extract to allow for the added dextrose.
