making your own 3d printer heat bed?

so as i've mentioned in other places here and there, i'm working to create a big 3d printer, something of a 2 foot2 printing surface space... someone else mentioned i would probably have to make my own (which i'd agree having spent time looking for a heat bed of that size)

i found some informationz- i will need 0.6w (or up to 1 w) per cm2 of printing space, which comes out to 60.962 which is 3716.1216 :whoa: multiplied by 0.6 and we get... 2229.67296

(shit, so i am going to need to draw 2,230w JUST for the heat surface??? am i doing this right?)
i havent been able to find any info on really big heat beds, only that i could maybe put like four of them or more under neath the heating surface? they typically come in 200w to 300w.. i would need them in like, 4-500w range i think

also, aluminum will be the best choice as it will distribute the heat evenly and is fairly cheap.


wat do? anyone ever experimented or know of a step by step guide to making one i am somehow missing?

30x30cm, and it's 600w, so i'd really only need 4 of these!

Sounds like a cool project. That's a lot of power, I guess you'd want to make sure you were using it on at least a 20 amp circuit.

I might have to run it at my neighbor's hangar out a town over from where i'm at then if it comes to that. i was just thinking the normal 15 amps isn't going to really cut it.

if he doesn't have a proper circuit, is it difficult to make my own 20+ amp circuit and rig it from my own house some how?

My knowledge of electricity is really basic but 15 amps at 120 volts would be only 1800 W I believe, where 20 A would be 2400 (and 30 A, 3600 W). There probably are some 20 or 30 A circuits already if you check the breaker box, then it's a matter of figuring out where they go.

Personally I'm enough of a novice that I would not want to mess around with anything inside a breaker box unless I really was sure about what I was doing. You definitely want to know you're using the correct gauge of wire for the amperage that will go through it, too light of a gauge and it's a fire hazard.
