200w heat lamp in small chicken coop - dangerous?
    #7666804 - 11/22/07 12:13 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Its getting cold, and im getting worried about my chickens.

We built them a new coop (nothing more than a fancy insulated dog house.) ... but the 4 chickens dont seem to use it, despite the cold temperatures (already at minus 10 Celsius at nite)

There is a 200W heat lamp we got from the feed store, built into the roof - However, we are concerned with the proximity of the walls, that it would be too hot. Also, the bulb they sold us, was not red, but white light...

The chicken breed is black australorp, and from what ive read.. is that they'll be fine in the cold up to minus 25 farenheit.

Is this correct..?

(i already asked about this, but received mixxed answers.. i just dont want to kill the ladies, and feel the heat lamp may be not necessary or worth the risk?)

the 200w bulb should be sufficient for extremely cold days/nights if the coop is insulated, it may be too much if your nights are still in the 30s.

make sure you have a place for the to roost, they're heavy sleepers and unless they're broody they'll probably feel safer on a perch

This is exactly what we've realized. they prefere to stay perched outside of the coop. Ill have to install a perch for them inside the coop in the next couple days, and will leave the light off until the cold really hits in January.

Edit: thanks for the help!
