Hey iv been following this guide and it just said to get vermiculite, which I did so I made my jars but then I was browsing through this other tek and it said use vermiculite medium or fine grade not powdery but I got powder. Just wondering if this makes a difference?

You got a powdery vermiculite? Thats odd, I haven't even found any like that. Are you sure you dont have just normal verm? How "powdery" is it - like sand, or like little pebbles?

Yes, it should work fine, but if it is too powdery I can see some problems arising, such as it being packed too hard or not enough moisture being held by it, as that is the point of vermiculite - it holds in moisture... I would guess that a less "powdery" vermiculite would be better at retaining the moisture.

how important is it for the verm on the top layer of a jar to be coarse verm as opposed to fine verm?

The dry vermiculite on the top layer is supposed to act as a barrier for contaminants, so I think either would work fine.
