I've noticed this too with miracle grow products, they just kinda suck. the one plant I have in mg soil definitely is suffering from nute lockout due to improper ph

I hate miracle grow,and I thought this was just regular perlite or I wouldn't have purchased it.
Yeah,all my plants have ph problems now do to this shit!

I'd also like to add that it's also halted the growth of a lot of my plants,and they are stuck in limbo and won't grow.
The plant pictured has been that way for a couple of weeks now,no change.
I'm going to toss it,and some of the others tomorrow.

You can't try to acclimate them to a different soil/mineral mix such as intelligentlife has mentioned before you :facepalm: throw them away.

their "organic" soil is bunk too, even unfertilized peat and verm works better than that shit I did a lil test to find out and it's pretty obvious how bad mg is

Also to add to the thread I have some cacti that I've started in a high nute soil and they seem to be doing fine but I'm a cactus noob. It definitely helps to make it nice and fluffy

They do well in rich soil if sown to rich soil.

Plant from poor soil moved to rich soil tend to have problems with nutrients.

I've sown as well seed to very rich 100% coco coir what it self burned other adult plants at 50/50 ratio. Seedlings germinated in same but stronger grow medium didn't had problems obviously. They adjusted themselves to growing medium they germinate on.

If person is not sure where to plant peyote = Use non-fertilized soil and very mineral rich.

Nitrogen is toxic to all plants as high doses. Cactus will tolerate rich soil from seed, but not if it's been 1-2years in poor soil and suddenly moved to full fertile soil.

Trichocereus will do better, lophophora plants isn't suggested to use strong soil if lophophora have not been in strong soil before.

Rocks and coco coir is ok. I collect rocks from nature as well.. I just wash them if need before use. Any kind of sand/rock piles are good material for lophophora grow. Just screen off all small grain sand (if coco coir isn't mixed to growing medium, allowing use of fine sand)

Lophs grow in many kind of soil. Thing is they do not have used to sudden changes, especially what comes to NPK-fertilizers and increasing them.

I always use non-fertile growing medium, add fertilizers (bio-bloom) later via watering. I start mostly with 10-20% strength or so.. Later on grower will know how much fertilizers can be given.

Sometimes I spray PK-fertilizers to skin of plants over night with water. But very randomly and not even every year.

Most cases major attack of spider mites seems they target plants shocked from fertilizers. Nitrogen rich fertilizers isn't suggested to use and if so, very slowly dose can be increased.

Most other plants(and cacti) do well very much with high Nitrogen soil and like being fertilized. Lophophora likes a well fertilizers but thing is it's so easy to give too much. It's easier to add more than reverse overdose caused burns and later on very likely spider mite attacks to sudden fertilized peyote. They target always sudden overdose fertilized plants in my garden.. Especially lophophora. Some strong fertilized lophs do well, but they should be grow from seed in strong fertilized and mineral rich soil to get adult lophophora tolerating high amounts of nitrogen without it's suddenly toxic.

They may develop tolerance against toxicity of nitrogen if seeds are germinated in rich soil and grown fast with fertilizers and lots of water. Rock mineral substrate grown old peyote will not be happy if it's been moved to strong Nitrogen-fertilized soil.

I have lots of "examples" from lophophora plants, moved to fertile grow medium and all suffer spider mite attacks. Others do not. I mean I have add too much Nitrogen at one time.

They will overgrow RSM and fertilizer burn scars ofc, so one transplant isn't visible after 2-3years. Sometimes there still might be so much of nitrogen, it's toxic enough. It's only fertilizer compound toxic to all plants. Toxicity of nitrogen is based on dosage.

Same way like human ingest some chemicals. Actual chemical isn't toxic but dose can be.Bad comparsion but same effect to different organism of life, dosage is measure of toxicity of chemiacls, not chemicals or compounds themselves. It's common chemistry.

Nitrogen will burn and possible kill any plant if given big enough amounts and suddenly. Seems there need to be shitloads of nitrogen to kill lophophora but they may die to spider mite outbreak as well because nitrogen have burned the sensitive smooth skin of lophophora cactus.

They survive most likely, but it's not suggested to increase fertilizers so fast. It can't be reserved when fertilizer burn starts to spread anymore. Only thing you can do it keep same level of nutrients than before or increase it slowly.

I have used that Miracle-Gro perlite in the past, but only for grafts. Didn't cause me any problems in that application.

Yeah the stock was Pereskiopsis. Wouldn't want to chance it with peyote directly, at least without soaking out the fertilizer with water or something.

I would try root buttons to MG? :shrug: (I've seen pics loph buttons rooted to perlite)
They seems to do well in fertilized coco coir and rooting well. I've grown fast that seedling period, then planted buttons back to rich coco coir. Rooting well and grow!

I grew some from my seeds and planted back after first flower or before they flower. Some 3-5cm buttons.. One had lots of mites in tray, rest had none. I removed it there but button seems to root in anykind of soil type. I used strong N coco coir to root buttons and they didn't shock because they didn't had roots in soil.:thumbup: (new roots to fertilized soil didn't cause any damage to epidermis of buttons so far)

I didn't knew perlite can be already fertilized.. No miracle grow stuff here. It would be good for plants need fertilizers lots and long time.

Fertilizers are so easy to add with watering later anyway, in case if there's risk old plant got damaged by fertilizing. Especially what comes to lophophora fertilizing it's easier via watering.:yesnod:

Sow them on top the soil sprinkle very little over them, keep soil moist not wet and put plastic wrap over it. Many can be done in one planter because you'll move them around later more than likely

The worst has happened with this miracle grow perlite crap!
I had re potted my Beloved Lophophora alberto-vojtechii in this crap,before I re potted my leafy plants,not thinking it would matter,but I was wrong.
I just noticed that he was looking kind of sickly,so I uprooted him to check out his roots,and I noticed orange rusty circular spots all over the tuberous root,and base of the plant that look like burn marks:facepalm:
I have never had a problem with this cactus before using this crap:mad2:
I have since rinsed off all the perlite and soil from the roots,and he's drying until I can figure out what to do next.
This really has put a damper on my night:sad:

You can't save fert burns when they start. Keep plant off the pot in dry. It takes time to overgrow scars. Also your plant attract mites if stressed so be ready to wipe them off.

Damage will spread fast and stop and you may keep on growing the plant. Damage of fertilizer burns usually spread after watering. Did this happened?

You can't do or should not do more than wait it will adjust to growing medium. In that case, leave it with bare roots without pot for some time. Then plant to non-fertilized grow medium.

I doubt you haven't kill it with ferts, don't worry, it's just going to have some scars they should grow out in relatively short period of time.

Once nitrogen toxicity starts to show to you, it's too late to prevent it. Plants outgrow fertilizer damage and later on mite scars are very common. Let the plant heal and plant it to rocky substrate and don't water it for a while. After plant have been out of pot for some time.

Sorry to hear about that. Try the usual, dry it thoroughly, plant in bone dry substrate, wait for roots to develop, etc.
If the rusty patches progress, chop off everything affected and do it till the core looks clean. Even if you end up with just the crown, it will grow new roots eventually - I have a very healthy and vigorous L. diffusa that once rotted in consequence of a fall and all that was left was maybe 2/3 of the button...
By the way, I am leaning more towards fungal infection than to any type of "burn". Pictures may help settle this. :wink:
