as we know it's an acronym, for graphics interchange format. it only makes sense that we would pronounce it jraphics interchange format.

I think the guy who created the .gif format trolled the world when he came out and said this retarded shit.

If you say the letters of the term, G-I-F, and shorten them to one syllable, it would make sense to pronounce it as jiff.  That being said, I personally, generally pronounce it as giff.

This whole debate gets thrown around every so often on Twitter in the web/software community. The general consensus is that even the creator wants people to say it "jiff", most agree that it's out of his hands anyway and will say it how they have always said it for years. I have always said it "gif" with a hard 'g' like 'gift' and 'graphics'. Then then we have words like 'gin' and 'giraffe' so who the hell knows. My Aussie friends say tomato differently too, doesn't mean anyone is right or wrong. But one thing for sure, as a full-time software engineer if you came ask me "how do I make this into a 'jiff'", I wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about.

In my opinion the person who invented it doesn't have a right to dictate a certain pronunciation. That might sound odd, but the reality is that the the G stands for graphic and graphic is of course a hard g. The pronunciation needs to obey the English language as a whole. Just because the person who invented it thinks a certain pronunciation is nifty, that doesn't change the fact that GIF is initials and the words that those initials stand for have authority in respect to the pronunciation of the initials.

Oh and I just noticed in that screen shot that someone agrees with me. :smile:

First-letter gs are rarely soft. Why would people be tempted to pronounce it 'jif'?

It's one of those things that makes barely any real difference to anything. With internet terms in particular, they're read and written a lot more often than they're spoken anyway.
