So a few people I work with pronounce the word "meme" as "mee mee". * 2

I was halfway into a conversation before I realized what the fuck they were talking about.  Anyone else have an example of people completely mispronouncing things?  (besides nuclear/nukular)

i used to do that, until i heard someone pronounce it.

luckily i had never said it outloud, and only knew the word for a few weeks before i actually heard it...

and knew it's REAL definition.

Before the 'internet meme' thing took off, I heard it pronounced "me me" :shrug:
Of course, people don't know that "meme" was a word before the internet changed it into being a bunch of pictures with Impact font captions.

The dreadful part is that mispronunciation has a way of taking over on the proper pronunciation because there are more idiots than literate people. How do you think "Boise" is meant to be pronounced? :picard:

BTW if there's any doubt, "meme" was coined to be an informational equivalent to the proteomic equivalent "gene".

It's meant to sound like "gene." It's definitely pronounced "meem". "Me-me" is definitely an incorrect pronunciation. There is no debate, no discussion about this. It's "meem".

But it's a French word. The correct pronunciation is actually more like bwoz. I guess Boiseans thought the correct pronunciation of their city was faggy. :shrug:

I'd never heard it pronounced before I spoke it, and for some reason it just clicked in my head as "meem", rather than, "meemee".  I'm no Englishtician but when you have a word that repeats itself like that, it's usually separated by a hyphen or a space.  Examples:  "go-go, doo-doo, pee-pee, bam-bam" etc.
