Re: So a few people I work with pronounce the word "meme" as "mee mee". [Re: Sophistic Radiance]
    #16595184 -

Actually, it's a fundamental feature of all language that there is no correct pronunciation of anything. It's one of the first things you learn in linguistics, and it had huge implications. Every time you pronounce a word, you pronounce it slightly differently than before, and over your lifetime the way you pronounce even the same word changes. It also changes based on your location and how your friends and family pronounce the same word, and how they pronounce that word changes over time, too. It even changes depending on who you're with. You pronounce words differently when you talk to your professors than when you talk to your friends.

Even if you're trying to pronounce the word the way that the inventor of the word pronounces it you'll never succeed because he has a different way of articulating words than you do based on the way his friends and family pronounce words. That's accent, everyone has an accent. Even if you think you're pronouncing meme like it's creator pronounces it, I absolutely garentee you're using the wrong vowels and articulating the consonants differently, possibly even using different consonants. Linguistically, the way you and he pronounce it are nothing alike.

Although accents and ways of pronouncing words are different, there is no correct way to pronounce anything. There are only different ways used by different people in different circumstances. Even wildly different ways of pronouncing words are not inherently better or worse than any others. They're only different.

This isn't just theoretical stuff, this is fundamental linguistics. Without it, there would only be a single language on earth because no differentiation would have happened since there would be a single correct way to pronounce things.

Try this one on for size..

The very notion that there are multiple ways to pronounce meme is in fact a meme in itself.

Are you trying to promote the methodology of linguistics as absolute dogma? Just because meme gets mispronounced doesn't mean it lacks a single, obviously correct pronunciation. Call me old-fashioned but I think Dawkins is the final authority on the word he made up at least until everybody who heard the correct pronunciation is dead and nobody remembers how to read his book in its original language.

I guess he probably pronounces it "maym" though. :argh:

TL;DR: nobody pronounces "gene" as "genie" so nobody should pronounce "meme", the word based on the word "gene", as "me me". People may be forgiven for their ignorance of the word's roots, but they must be corrected.

I was curious, so I checked several English dictionaries this week: my own, online, and in the library at the college where I teach.  The "official" pronunciation is "mi:m" where "mi" = "mee."  The etymological explanation is that it derives from "mimic" as coined by Dawkins.  I think that explains  how folks have arrived at alternative pronunciations.

(But I sympathize with the folks that speak/read/write French.  When I first read The Selfish Gene I mentally pronounced it "mème.")

It's okay. I used to pronounce "rendezvous" according to standard English phonetics.

I always pronounced it as 'mee mee' ever since the word first appeared because it's an internet word; you don't say that shit out loud. But now, now that internet jokes are cool or something and people started saying it out loud I realized it's may may or some stupid shit. I still don't say it that way. Mee mee fo lyfe foo

I'd never heard it pronounced before I spoke it, and for some reason it just clicked in my head as "meem", rather than, "meemee".  I'm no Englishtician but when you have a word that repeats itself like that, it's usually separated by a hyphen or a space.  Examples:  "go-go, doo-doo, pee-pee, bam-bam" etc.

Tutu.

Ever heard of a silent U preceded by a consonant formed by the lips? E is special and "meem" just looks silly while failing to match the phonetics of the word upon which it's based.

I'm 100% sure you missed the point of my reply.

Funny I got a warning and my post edited by newbie for saying basically that exact same thing.

Quote redacted slightly so I don't get another warning for quoting the 'f' word.

I thought it was pronounced Me Me and I heard people pronounce it as Me Me. Why spell it like that if u dont say it like that? Internet words are fake words anyway, meme used to be a real word before the internet came along. It must be a intentional trick to trick people into saying it wrong. Im just going to keep pronouncing it as me me.
