Well, I have a little bit of a crazy idea...
I remember one time when I was a child, my teacher showed us that you could grow a white rose in water that had food coloring in it, and that it would make the white rose tie die to whatever color it was...
What if I mixed the water in a spray bottle with a bottle full of red or blue or green food coloring?
I don't think the dye would have any effect on the shrooms, except maybe they would absorb it, and change colors just like the white rose did!
Stupid? Sure... But it would also be pretty neat to have a batch of vibrant red or blue shrooms@
teehee! any objections? If not I intend to test said theory...

Actually AinaskO tried this months back, there's no pictures but theres some general information on the thread about adding food colouring and such to humidity for shrooms if you wanted to look.

I remember something about this vaguely from a really really long time ago. To sum it up, not they will not change color.

Well, it may occur, i would expect though that all the water utilized by the mushroom, from inoculation to casing layer have abundant amounts of food coloring in it. Also a theory is tested, a hypothesis is untested, what you have is a hypothesis.
Also you should know that mushrooms are an abundant source of dye, and there are several books published explaining how to use mushrooms to make it. Mushrooms have been used to make dye for at least a thousand years, and with the advent of cultivation it's made practical... it wouldn't be IMplausible. I would expect certain species would be better suited to change color, and certain substrates may affect the outcome, but i would kind of expect that if you tried long enough you could get it to happen eventually.

Go with day-glo tye-dye!! Or use a colouring with phosphates, so they'll glow in the dark/blacklight!

I suggest uranium. It gives a nice neon orange color. Glows in the dark too.
Gotta go, my triple nipple and my 5th testicle are itching.

By tripple nipple do you mean the actual third nipple or is it a nipple with three nipples of its own?

Perhaps you should look into albino varieties, they might color more easily.
I think it's a neat idea, but SWIM decided it's probably not worth it with the increased difficulty in recognizing contams. It would be really cool to have some green and red christmas shrooms this time of year.

Here's a much easier idea. Just take a magic marker (they are non-toxic) and color your dried shrooms red and green. Then you can tell people you did it with food coloring just like those carnations from kindergarten. All your friends will think you are the coolest cuz you succeeded where all those smart scientist types in AC at the shroomery failed!
And the triple nipple is just a third nipple that sprouted out of my forehead. Kinda sucks cuz it blocks my third eye.
And micro sorry, but I can't ensure you'll get five testicles as it varries from subject to subject. I do know that uranium favors an odd number of testicles though, so who knows, you might get 7!

Just rub some of your uranium on it, this will cause it to grow into another head. You'll be twice as smart and figure out how to color shrooms using food coloring so that your don't have to cheat with markers.

If so, then maybe a synthetic dye of some kind would be better. Aren't most food colorings based on vegetable products?
You may not want to ingest it, but maybe an ink of some sort. Indian ink?
