Need help identifying mushroom.

I've looked through the forums and field guide a bit to discover that this specimen probably doesn't have any psychoactive properties, but I'd still like some help trying to figure out what it is. While walking through a swampy area in Maine I stumbled upon this patch growing on some sort of dead tree stump (not pine) with green moss all over it.The surrounding area was full of pine saplings. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with me at the time so I took a sample with me. The color was much more vibrant of a reddish color than it is in the pictures. Maybe someone could point me in the right direction in order to figure out what this is.

Looks like reishi (ganoderma species) to me.

Thanks for the reply, koraks. So what does the ganoderma species entail? Just some regular, rather pretty looking mushroom, edible, or poisonous? I can't seem to find any info on this site though.

I'd agree with Ganoderma... They're said to have medicinal properties. If you can't find info about it here, google it.

Reishi is believed to be a mood-enhancer by some people. I think tea is made from it which is drunk. It is supposed to make you feel, well, happier. Never tried it, and I'm not sure about dosages and whatnot. Do a Google if you're interested in the whole Reishi thing, as GumbyDude suggested. Oh, and in the Gourmet and Medicinal section of the Shroomery there's more often than not a lot to do about Reishi as well.

For a wild specimen, certainly. Someone round the Shroomery here grew some 19" stems though

good point. you can always get them to grow elongeated, with higher CO2 levels.
