worms in shrooms
    #2145865 - 11/30/03 05:03 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I found some Galerinas the other day, and thought they were cyans so i dryed em and all before i even found out there were bad. Thank allah for this forum. but anyways, i went to the paper i had em drying on to throw them away, and i see all these little little things all over the paper. closer inspection proved that they were small wormlike things. there were white and no more than like a centimeter long or something, maybe smaller, i didnt measure. Most were dead but a few were still worming around. Seems they didnt like the drying mushroom and tryed to escape. It was pretty fucking sick if you ask me.

What im getting at is, is this normal/common? I'd hate to find some edible mushrooms, and end up eating some nasty ass little worm things that could be dangerous to my health. if its normal how do you get rid of these before consuming mushrooms, and are they dangerous to your health?

It's *extremely* common. I have to reject more than half of the edible mushrooms I find because of maggot infestation.

Eating the maggots is apparently harmless. In fact, they're high in protein and probably nutritious. On the other hand, as they tunnel through the mushroom they leave feces behind, and those feces can contain nasty bacteria which can cause food poisoning.

The main thing is to reject any mushrooms which have become too infested. The maggots are usually found first at the base of the stem (I often find them first in the tubes of boletes). Cut the base of the stem (after you've identified your mushroom) to check for the holes. If there are lots of holes (or the mushroom has been hollowed out), leave themushrom there. If it's a bolete and the tubes are soft, peel the tubes and leave them.

If you find only a few (or no) tubes, you're OK. Drying will cause the maggots to leave the mushroom and kill any that don't.

Cooking the mushrooms will destroy most food poisoning type toxins, and mushrooms should be cooked before being eaten anyway.

Happy mushrooming!

Happy mushrooming!
