Sun Ra and the Arkestra

I've listened to a little bit of his work on YouTube and read his biography on Wiki. Bit of a strange cat that believes he is an angel sent from outer space sent to bring peace to the world. Easy to shrug him off as a nut but the funny thing is that he gets a lot of praise and accolades. One website had him on the top of their list of greatest musicians, above Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Coltrane, etc. The author of the website also seemed to have a fair knowledge of jazz and music in general so it wasn't just a randomly compiled list. Also listened to a musician that had worked with Thelonious Monk and Coltrane describe Sun Ra's music as 'very advanced' and that it took him 6 months of playing Sun Ra's music to become aware of the intervals that Sun Ra was using (anyone with music theory knowledge, could you elaborate on what an interval is?).

Personally, I don't know what to think. It doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard of (except a John Frusciante solo in the song '666'). Very curious to find out what some Shroomerites know about him.

I dig on Sun Ra, but I would never consider him better than Coltrane. Not in a million years. Not better than Davis either. In fact I would probably put him behind Ornette Coleman (who is a little more comparable considering he is a free jazz player.)
In music theory an interval is the relationship between two notes. Intervals can be melodic or harmonic. I'm not a jazz major or anything though, so I can't describe them aptly. I'll ask my friend tomorrow, he knows his shit (just graduated from Eastman School of Music for jazz sax performance.)

Oh, and by the way, he doesn't believe he IS much of anything anymore since he's dead. But yeah, he was a pretty interesting dude.
Rumor has it that if he was unhappy with a person in his band's playing or anything he would just ditch him. They could be in different countries and he wouldn't care. Ra would just tell the rest of the band that the person in question was fired basically and they would just up an leave.

Sun Ra is some wild stuff. My first clue to it came from The Residents song Space is the Place, which i found out was a Sun Ra thing, then picking up Heliocentric Worlds volume1&2 and feeling very strange.

A musical interval is the distance between two notes, in western music, this involves the relationships between the seven notes of the scale(the eighth being a recurrence of the tonic, or first note in the scale).

If you've ever heard the piece Thus Spake Zarathustra, which is also the theme to Space Odyssey 2001, the second note is a Perfect 5th above the tonic, and the third is an octave above the tonic.

Or in "Here Comes the Bride", the second note is a Perfect 4th above the first.

The NBC three note theme consists of the tonic, a Major 6th, and a Perfect 4th.

The second note in the Star Trek theme is a Minor 7th and the Jaw's theme consists of a repeating half step interval, from the tonic to the Minor 2nd.

You also have the dreaded Diminished 5th, or Augmented 4th, which was forbidden by church and other authorities for its dissonance. This interval sits right at the center of the scale. It's the oscillating interval of an ambulance siren. It's the first and second note in The Simpson's theme. It's great for conveying tension, despair, weirdness. Each interval has certain characteristics of feeling.

There is also the consideration of intervals in the forward progression of a piece of music. Certain progressions are typically common to certain styles of music. Like jazz uses a lot of ii, V, I(2nd, 5th, and first scale steps) and I,IV,V progressions. Blues you'll hear a lot of I,IV,I,V,I. This is oversimplified since music usually involves chords, and that's where Harmonic intervals come into play, but I won't get into that.

Melodic interval theory is very simple, based around each tone of the scale, tonic through octave(first through eighth). The interval ladder is slightly irregular depending on the number of steps between each note, but that might be confusing if you're not versed in basic theory.

I'm primarily a drummer and singer so I don't use melodic and harmonic theory as much as most instrumentalists. But in my limited study of theory, I think learning the intervals was one of the most effective ways of advancing my understanding of theory, and enhancing communication with other musicians. A good thing to do is memorize a song for every interval from a Minor 2nd up through an Octave. Having that recognition is very useful. That's probably a lot more than you wanted to know.
