Coltrane fans

I just picked up The Olatunji Concert (his last live recording) and I have to say I was a little let down. Only two songs and about an hour's worth of music, not very many melodies...more less just all instruments in total chaos, which I like during certain parts because it adds intensity, but thats all this performance consist of. There is a bass solo that sounds pretty cool.

Any other recommendations? Also does anyone feel his music declined in his latter years?

I agree. I think that he got too free for my tastes later on. I'd say things began to get a little too out there around 1970, I think when he started playing with Rashid ALi. It was at this point that his performances got that loud chaotic, everyone going nuts feeling that wouldn't let up for like 30 minutes at a time. Kinda gives me a headache.
Stick to A Love Supreme, and his live albums from the village vanguard. They're the best, IMO.

Hmm...I thought he died in 67. The Olatunji concert is supposed to be his last known live recording and it's in 67, supposively the same year he died. You're right about RA drumming for him.

I want to get A Love Supreme next. Have you heard the stuff he did with Miles Davis?

I know he did other stuff with Davis, but what I've got is by the Miles Davis Quintet, which Coltrane was in. Got 4 albums I think, Workin' With, Steamin' With, Relaxing With and one other, Cooking With??? They're really great records, especially Working WIth. What collaborations were you talking about?

Talking about Miles, have you heard bout the new live at Montreux realease? 10 concerts between 70s and 90s. The whole boxed set is something like 20 CDs and ridiculously expensive, about ?200 I think, but it's meant to be really good. Think you can buy the CDs seperately, so I'm gonna check some of it out I think, maybe the 91 gig as that was one of the last concerts he ever played.

Actually, the ones you have with MDQ are the ones I was talking about. I want some of that materiel. That era was before he went solo, I think.
