John Coltrane

I recommend all fans of psychedelic music to go listen to John Coltrane's Meditations. It's his CD from after he started doing acid. This is really really good shit. If you think squarepusher or hendrix is good, especially, you should look at coltrane. Hendrix called coltranes psychedelic stuff sky-chruch music, and you can definately hear a big influence. It's just amazing stuff. Check it out!

I've only got Stellar Regions, which I enjoy greatly. I will try to get some more.

Ascension is nuts.

Where is there any proof he did LSD? Any interviews with afmormentioned tenor referring to the substance in any way? Or just some hodge-podge article EHEHEHE

He was using it in 1965. You can very easily hear it in the change his music went through at that time. Read a biography sometime.

No it changed becuase it was a reaction to the current avante-garde jazz scene around that time, with Ornette Coleman in the late 50's, Cecil Taylor and such. Coltrane wanted to support them, and wanted to get in on it. Sure it sounds good to say acid caused him to make Ascension or something. But I have never heard that is the case.

actually

i would blame the change in coltrane's sound on his relationship with alice macleod which he married in 1965 (which leads us up to the infamous alice coltrane).

ive heard people call alice coltrane the "the original yoko", saying she killed coltranes sound.

either way, im not into anything coltrane did post 1964, probally starting with sun ship and meditations. i just don't get it. i know plenty of people who do, but i certainly don't.

don't get me wrong, im not one of these purists who shake thier fists at the sky and scream about how miles davis single handedly put jazz to death with bitches brew, because i am a big fan of the jazz/fusion sounds of the 70's (especially live-evil and black beauty, those are some of my favorate albums), but i see no order in the spacial sounds coltrane was trying to achieve.

Ah I hadnt heard about his wife, so that could be part of it. But I know for a fact that he liked the current avante-garde jazz scene going on around that time which started a few years earlier, so he wanted to support it.

For starters...

"Upon returning from an inner voyage on LSD in 1965, the master of the tenor saxophone and spiritual truthseeker reported that "I perceived the inter-relationship of all life forms." this quote and others about Trane's LSD use (it was actually still legal at the time) are attributed to un-named quartet members and friends in more than one Coltrane biography, including:

Ascension : John Coltrane and His Quest
Spirit Catcher :The Life and Art of John Coltrane ;
John Coltrane: His Life and Music
Acid Dreams: The Complete Social History of LSD"
http://www.miqel.com/coltrane/john_coltrane.html

Also, see:
Chasin' the Trane: The music and mystique of John Coltrane

Yes but we are talking about his departure into more avante-garde jazz.

I haven't heard anything post A Love Supreme. Any suggestions as to what I should listen to in order to hear what his style transformed into?

Also, would you consider A Love Supreme to be similar to his later style? It still seems fairly ordered, although it does seem to come apart as the song progresses, only to come back together near the end of each part. I consider myself a jazz purist (in some respects) but I still find that ALS is one of my favorite jazz works.

well, i think a love supreme is fantastic, but i think in portions of it, you can see him start to stray a little bit from normal structure - ie running up and down scales hitting random notes sometimes.

his more popular works post love supreme are pretty unstructured if you ask me. mostly just noise and wilding out. its more like art than music at that point. some people dig it, some people dont.
