24/7 light
    #2124362 - 11/20/03 03:23 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

can leaving the light on all the time hurt ? a FOAF's casings dont seem to be colonizing or pinning, he has yet to get a light timer.
also what is the best way to case rye grains or millet. substrate depth, incubation time... thanks

mushrooms do not need a light cycle. Natural light they recoeve indirectly during the day is fine. All they need is a few minutes of light to tell the mycelium where to form pinheads. Look into casing using the REz-Effect Tek that can be found if you search the growlogs.

I give them about 50/50

I have experienced better results with a sufficient amount of light than with just a few minutes a day, especially with how the mushrooms grow (straight up, versus twisted and horizontal).

Then again thats just me.

I would give them at least 8 hours of darkness though. Just my gut feeling since they get that under natural conditions.

If you have no choice but to give them light all day, it will be fine but don't purposely try. some darkness is good.

well a FOAF turned off the light on his casings for the first time and they started pinning... odd.

Well if you think about it they naturaly grow durring the night time, light is only needed to trigger the pinning hormone and tell them which way to grow. My friend gives his 4 hrs of light and 18 of darkness and has found that to be his personal favorite.

They only need light for a few minutes a day is crap. This is what Stamets seems to think and I?m gonna go by him.

I remember a while back someone on here held their own experiment and found out that with less light, his mushrooms would grow more. I personally only give them 2hrs a day.

Cloud 9, that must be a horrible schedule to follow! How does it affect your sleep?

a foaf's come to the conclusion that leaving the light on 24/7 with no darkness doesnt allow the pinning hormone to be released , resulting in overlay. the mushrooms need to have the dark/light cycle to release the hormone. that is just a quick hypothesis. i may be wrong.

What do you mean? What I meant was he only gived his cakes 4 hours of light each day, which allows 18 hrs of darkness.

I had a Gt casing and showed light on it every day a lot..dont really know how many hours..but i noticed that they jsut stopped growing..stunted teh growth..i air exchanged 4-5 times a day..i dotn know what was up..i misted 1 a day...im pretty sure it was because of the light because a friend of mine found teh same problem.
Well, actually i just dont know..any experts?
