Actually, I have read that research seems to indicate that there is a link between Glyphosate exposure (sold as Roundup) weed killer which is very heavily used and rates of autism. I think there's much more to Autism than we realize.

Do you have a source for that?

Aw, sorry, it was a few months ago and I don't recall the specific journal it was in. Right now, I gotta go snooze cause I spent last night puking. If you remind me later, I'll try to find it for you. Night.

Sounds good. Enjoy your snooze. I'm interested to see it so I'll probably remind you about it later.

Autism is diagnosed based on behavior.

so maybe its a parenting thing. i know a kid who has autism, his parents neglected him and he was subjected to domestic violence. so maybe that messed him up. who knows:shrug:

The method of diagnosis has no bearing on the cause of the disease. The causes of autism are not well understood but genetics and certain environmental factors, like heavy metal exposure, have been correlated to rates of autism. I don't think abuse or other parental factors are believed to be involved.

It is pretty clearly heavily genetic but not all autists have the same mutation.  There is a whole broad spectrum of autisism labeled behaviors and in answer to Falcon's query about why it has increased I would say with complete confidence that it is 100% due to increased diagnosis.

It is heavily genetic but there are other factors that can seemingly increase the risk of getting autism as well. And even though we know its genetic, we still don't know the mechanism or all the genes that are involved as far as I know. I definitely agree that the rise is likely due to more diagnosing and a better understanding of what falls into ASD.

I would agree.

Obama said "Some people are suspicious that it's connected to the vaccines. This person (pointing to someone in the crowd) included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it."

Obama was arguing against a link between vaccines and autism.

The science isn't inconclusive though. There isn't a single self-respecting scientist that would seriously suggest a connection between vaccines and autism.

True, not today.  But the science was only settled in the last decade.

I don't think there ever was a believed connection though. Thats like saying the science has only recently been settled that the moon isn't cheese and before that it was inconclusive. Its a misleading statement.

My stump speech on vaccination

My fellow Americans I come before you to discuss a matter of grave importance for our children.  Vaccinations.  I appreciate the concern of many about government over-reach into the personal decisions of families, especially those involving medical decisions.  But I also appreciate and recognize the benefits of global vaccination.  I won't force you to vaccinate your child.  But your child will not be allowed to attend any state funded schools or participate in any state funded activities often offered to home schooled children.  You will have two options, one of which does not yet exist.  Home schooling or a private school that receives no state funding.  There are some very few children who are at exceptional risk from vaccines that I will grant a waiver but they are very very few.  Those who opt out for non-medical reasons should not be allowed to threaten those with a bona fide medical reason.

In conclusion I would like to make it quite clear that if you disagree with this you should vote for my opponent because I do not want the votes of idiots.

Also I think there's a fair amount of entitlement. Not vaccinating your child is basically saying I deserve to rely on the herd immunity that exists in a population. At the most basic level it's saying I believe vaccines are potentially harmful, and I want other people to vaccinate so I don't have to. And for people to hide under this and say, "Oh, it's just a personal decision," it's being dishonest. It's a personal decision in the way drunk driving is a personal decision. It has the potential to affect everyone around you.

Q: But why liberals?

S.M.: I think it taps into the organic natural movement in a lot of ways.

I talked to a public health official and asked him what's the best way to anticipate where there might be higher than normal rates of vaccine noncompliance, and he said take a map and put a pin wherever there's a Whole Foods. I sort of laughed, and he said, "No, really, I'm not joking." It's those communities with the Prius driving, composting, organic food-eating people.
