Rand Paul raises more than $1 million in third quarter

Rand Paul fans rallied around his call for aid this afternoon and evening by helping him reach a momentous goal. He sent out an email to supporters of his Senate campaign earlier today requesting help to close out the third quarter in a big way (by midnight tonight), saying, "It would be an incredibly powerful message if we could pass $1,000,000 for the quarter. This would finally send a message to the establishment Republicans that our candidacy is real, that it must be taken seriously and that their hand-picked candidate will not waltz to the nomination." His fundraising totals were $14,000 shy of the million. However, within a few short hours after his message was delivered, his request was granted. He raised over $33,000 today and was able to close the quarter with $1,009,268. On a video on his website, he says he thinks there's a chance his campaign will beat all of the major candidates in fundraising this quarter.

His ability to raise such large amounts of money, despite the Republican establishment backing his opponent, Trey Grayson, is further evidence that 2010 is on its way to being the year of the outsider. On the video thanking his donors for their support, Rand said that he's read letters that are sent to him saying, "Here's twenty dollars this week, and we'll give you some more when we get our paycheck in." Even during an economic recession, or maybe partly because of the recession, people are willing to donate whatever they can for new, principled leadership who will stick to their oath of office--to uphold and defend the Constitution, and promote freedom in all areas of our lives, supporting both economic and civil liberties.
