Never worry about being too smart, sheekle.  They either get it or they don't.

Analyzing your initial post I have concluded that your peers undeniably perceive your demeanor as supercilious.

Seriously, I think you're either hanging out with morons or it's all in your head. I've had people say, "Damn, [mantis], you use a lot of big words, don't you? You're like a scientist." I've never had anyone bash me for it. If they did I would have no choice but to fervently pontificate.

Please enlighten yourselves here.  If you need to get an idea out that involves a word that's not heard in your typical conversation, throw in a synonym or the quick-to explanation right after the word.  You won't look like the supposed, pretentious asshat you think you are, and the idea will get across.

i understand the op completely.

when i was still hanging out with my drug-buddies i had to dumb my speach down to keep from sounding pretentious.

really though, the reason "big words" are great, is because they are highly accurate usually and have a very specific, concise meaning.

so as long as everyone in the conversation knows what the particular word means, theres no reason not to use it and communicate your thoughts more accurately.

I see multiple levels of social intelligence at play.

At one level, the speaker has a limited range of vocabulary and thus is unable to correctly use or understand many words that others use.

At another level, the speaker has an expanded vocabulary, in which he or she has thoughts, which he or she expresses verbatim regardless of the context in which the expression occurs.

At yet another level, the speaker has an expanded vocabulary, in which he or she thinks; however, the speaker makes an attempt to encode his or her thoughts into an expression which will be understood by the listener, in order to facilitate the most meaningful communication.

While it is true that having an expanded vocabulary allows communicants to increase the precision of meaning being transmitted, it is also true that using vocabulary with which the listener is not familiar not only fails to facilitate the transmission of meaning but can also negatively impact communicant rapport.

Yeah I've heard people talk that use words or figures of speech in ways that they don't really fit. To me it makes it seem like they're trying to sound smart but using words that aren't quite suitable to the situation and it ends up having the reverse effect of what they intended..

At least that's what I thought, until recently when I met someone who tends to use the same figures of speech in the same situations so they have an idea of how to use them but the way they use them doesn't make sense to me, yet they are consistent in the way they use them. If that makes sense, so maybe to them it seems it fits and that's just how they learned it? They're also from a different place than where I'm from so who knows:shrug:

I would say this an effect of the first class of people trying their darndest to measure up to the second class of people.

People used to refer to me as "the smart one", but I had a hard time connecting socially. This is because I couldn't code-switch. Now people find me to be much more relatable.

this. I've gotten the same shit from people back in my hometown on occasion too where they think I'm a stuck up bitch because I wear a nice coat and say big words.

If I don't know the meaning of a word and can't figure it out from the context then I usually stop the person and ask what the word means. I was living with a bunch of people getting masters degrees from an ivy league school at one point, so a lot of times we got drunk and discussed obscure intellectual topics some of which would go right over my 20 year old head at the time, and they never ever chastised me for pausing and asking them what a word meant or to clarify something.

How the fuck else are you supposed to get smarter if you're afraid to ask questions and learn new things?

Being articulate is good, but unnecessary use of words which share  a more common synonym is just pretentious, mostly. Like in art class the insist on using 'maquette' to mean model, which is simply using the french equivalent... it doesn't signify anything different, its literally the same word. Fucking artists
