Any Orchid Growers?

Im looking to get into orchids and was wondering if anyone else here is into them. Any pics or advice on growing from seeds would be wonderful. TIA!

I just ordered some seeds I thought looked cool. I didn't realize orchids plants could be so costly.

The fancy more rare cultivars/species can be.  You can get a phalenopsis (sp?) from Lowes for $10-30 depending on the size.

I used to look a lot into the chemistry of Orchids. I have book called "The Scent of Orchids" that list the  chemical composition of the scent several orchid species. It turns out their chemistry is pretty diverse. The most interesting thing I found is that the scent of the species Aeranthes grandiflora is made up much in part to phenylpropandione, the precursor to natural amphetamines like ephedrine and cathinone.

If you catch them in around late fall you can get some for little$ at lowes I bought 3 fo $5 a piece and already in flower. I wish I had taken pics when they were flowering but most of the year theri not so beautiful and their very difficult for me to get flowering. I hope someone could fill me in on a better way.

I was once an avid orchid grower, but not anymore. They're too hard to keep going in my mediterranean climate, the summer drought and heat kills them. Phalaenopsis are easy(ish) to keep going indoors, they don't even need too much light. Cymbidium are tough and most of them will grow happily outdoors year round here in Portugal (they're terrestrial too, unlike most other orchid genera). There's a countless number of hybrids from the Oncidium alliance that produce exquisite flowers and there's surely one to fit your particular conditions (they're sensitive to heat, though). Cattleya species and hybrids are magnificent but will need frequent repotting. Paphiopedilum (slipper orchids) are lovely but some can be tricky. I personally never had any success with them. :frown:

Main problem for me is substrate and water quality, epiphytes have a clear dislike for lime in the water and collecting enough rain water to last me all year is anything but easy. If you manage to strike a balance involving humidity, an open substrate that will hold some moisture while allowing roots to breathe and mild temperatures, you should be ok with the modern hybrids.

is anything special needed or to know in order to sprout from seed?
I picked up 15 of the white and yellow ones and 10 of the monkey face orchids as well as a decent sized bag of mixed astrophytums:rockon:

You can get them on discount when they finish blooming.  I actually think they go dormant in during the heat of the summer and bloom in the fall/winter.  A good repotting (if needed) should happen when the blooms drop.  If you buy a discount one (or any from Lowes), you should probably repot to check for rotten roots and to change the medium.  The stuff from the nursery is usually a little water retentive and compacted/breaking down.  The hardware stores don't take the best care of their plants.

Man, don't get me wrong but I think you were taken. Orchid seeds are LITERALLY dust and getting them to germinate involves either a well established adult, perfect conditions and a lot of patience OR a lab, sterile conditions, agar-based growing media, etc. Anyone claiming to sell 10 or 15 seeds is surely pulling your leg.

Do they not require a certain mycorrhizae in the soil, as they don't come with nutrition like most other seed? One way to start them is to sow on the surface of the mother plants soil, or transfer some of the mothers roots into some sterilized medium.

I actually was tempted to buy some discounted Orchids,Flytraps,African Violets,and pitcher plants,and they had them all marked down under a dollar!!!
but they were in such bad shape,I didn't even want to mess with any of it.
Now I wished I would ahve:facepalm:
