My First Orchid

Lowes had orchids on clearance today, so I had to get myself one!

This one stood out most to me for w/e reason, even if it is predominantly white.







Also, had a Mammillaria plumosa bloom open up too.

orchids here have gotten incredibly inexpensive of recent. Supermarkets etc all stock them. Super mass produced with tissue culture in Holland.

The Mamm or the orchid?

The orchid I purchased flowering.

The Mammillaria take about 2-3 days to open up with good sunlight.

I was into orchids when I was younger.  But most of mine wound up dying one way or another. 

Things to remember are, that they actually don't like much watering, but prefer high humidity, which seems odd, but makes sense when you think about how they grow in the wild. Anyway, I'd like to try again someday. I bet I could grow the hell out some orchids now.

Yeah, the wild ones I've seen tended to be epiphytes, which certainly would explain any distaste for too much water.

I always thought they were a really neat flower I really like the other type not phaleonopsis or whatever but the other one that gets only single flowers and grows close to the surface with the little adams apple looking thing every since I was a kid and saw The Wall where the one eats the other this flower has intrigued me
they are always cheap at lowes and walmart anyione know how well thye would do in my medical garden? I know my humidity would be a little low during flowering but during veg would hopefully be when my orchid flowered anyone ever try this? I would like to put the extra space under the lights to use

Yeah. Most of the tropicals are epiphytes or lithophytes. It seems that most of the orchids venturing into the northern hemisphere are terrestials that favor leaf litter of deciduous forests.  It's an absolutely massive and fascinating family.

I used to grow a lot of those back in NZ, they are one of the easiest orchids to grow, you shouldn't have much trouble with it.

They are not that expensive around my area, at least the Phalaenopsis varieties.

the Cleveland Botanical Gardens has a Orchids and birds exhibit I believe yearly.. its really neat they also have year round 2 miniature deserts that are from opposite ends of the planet with all the actual things in the desert actually coming from the original desert itself.Including a turtle that must be like 500 years old and butterflys that they release daily at 2:00.. if you are ever in the cleveland area you should check this and the natural history museum out as they are located across the street from each other and also near the newly renovated art museum....happy trails
